FULLERTON – Longtime resident Lois Shell recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
The former elementary school teacher moved to town with her family in 1918 at the age of 7.
Her father, Arthur Shell, was in real estate first with Will and Howard Irwin and later with his own firm.
Spending her adolescent years in Fullerton's local schools, Shell eventually graduated from UCLA. For the next 40 years, she worked as a full-time teacher in Fullerton before retiring, though she continued to aid children in education as a tutor.
She has also been a strong supporter of St. Jude Medical Center, said nephew Jack Alwen.
In retirement, he said, she developed interests in reading, gardening and traveling around the world with her sister, Mildred.
"(She) believes her longevity is a result of very positive thinking and not allow negative thoughts to enter into her mind," Alwen said. "Also regular exercise

STANLEY CRAMER, FUHS 1943

Cramer, Stanley Edward,
passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the age of 86 with his wife of 63 years, Esther, at his side. A native of North Orange County he was born in Fullerton on July 29, 1925 to Hattie and George Cramer.
Stan grew up in Fullerton and was captain of Fullerton High School's 1943 CIF Championship basketball team. He was also a star of the football team and the 220 runner on the track team.
Drafted upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was sent off to basic training in Mississippi. The Army sent him to the Ruhr in Germany as a sergeant and machine gun squad leader where he and his squad were involved in many intense battles.
At the end of the war, the Army assigned him to play football and basketball for the 407th Infantry division known as the Ozarks. In 1945 he was named Football Player of the Year for the European Theater of Operation.
After he was discharged from the Army, USC invited Stan to play football and basketball. He played freshman football and basketball and played left end on the varsity football squads of '47, '48, and '49 which included playing in the 1948 Rose Bowl Game. While at USC he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Stan graduated from USC in 1950 with a Bachelor's degree and went on to earn a Master of Arts degree. He coached with Bob Blackman at Pasadena City College and he taught and coached at Whittier High School, California High School and Cerritos College. Mount San Antonio College hired Stan as head football coach of the Mounties and he coached there for a number of years. Eventually Stan moved into the counseling department at Mt. SAC and became the Dean of Guidance and Counseling at the junior college.
When not on the football field with his players or in the film room with his coaches preparing for a game, Stan could be found fishing in the Sierras or in Baja California. A committed Christian from his youth, he was very active in his church, La Habra Untied Methodist. He was involved in the La Habra Kiwanis as they raised funds to support local schools and students.
Stan and his wife, Esther traveled to all corners of the world and to every continent, but they always returned home to La Habra, and the friends they had acquired since childhood.
Stan is survived by his wife Esther, his daughters, Cynthia Freeman, Melinda (Ward) Ching, and Janet Buddle and their children, Bri and David Freeman, Christopher and Andrew Ching, Patrick Esguerra and Chanel Brooks.
A private family burial has already taken place at Rose Hills Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m Saturday, February 25, at La Habra United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Stan's name to The La Habra Historical Museum or the La Habra United Methodist Church.

HOW TO CONTACT POW WOW COMMITTEE

Many classes do not have a Pow Wow representative who contacts his class with information about Pow Wow luncheons, etc.
We usually are able to get news about the luncheons uploaded to the following web site (see a little farther down), but that site hasn't been up-dated since 7/25/2011 and I don't have any idea why as I can't get an answer from the web master. I can only hope that Kurt is OK. The information for the 2011 luncheon is still on the site. The three people listed in that 2011 article can be contacted if you need future news.

When you get on that site, you click on "click here for more" to see the Pow Wow information.

At this time there is no way to get your e-mail address put on that alumni directory or changed if you have a new address.

The handout that you get at the luncheon always lists how to contact some members of the committee. We always advise you to save that page. Cut out that information and stick it on your refrigerator. (Also, you can always google Connie Stafford Van Horn. My e-mail address is on my blog.) If your class does not have even one person who thinks enough of his classmates to send out some letters or e-mails, you are on your own getting information unless a rep from another class takes pity on you and covers your class too.

There is a collection of Betty Lou's ceramics at the old La Habra Library, now a museum. Betty graduated from FUHS. She died a while back, but her ceramics live on as collectors’ items. The museum is open from noon to four on Saturdays. The collection will be on display now through March 31.

HIGH POINT, NC – Jo Ann Mackey Hull, 60, died Wednesday, January 18th, at
High Point Regional Hospital, NC, after an heroic 10-year bout with many
complications of diabetes.
She was the daughter of June and the late F.G. (Bud) Mackey, of
Fullerton, California. Born in Anaheim, California, on August 29, 1951,
Jo Ann grew up in Fullerton, California. She was predeceased by her only
sibling, William, but is survived by her near-brother William P.
Ferguson, of Orange, California.
After completing her education at the University of Kansas, she married
her husband of 38 years, David F. Hull, who survives her.
Always an adventurous spirit, Jo Ann traveled through Western Europe after
high school accompanied by Marty Bender, a close girlfriend. Her openness
to new experiences prepared her well as she and her husband lived in
Taipei, Taiwan, and throughout the United States: Lubbock, TX, Cambridge,
MA, southern California, Redmond, WA, McLean and Great Falls, VA. They
relocated to High Point, NC, in 2005.
Jo Ann is also survived by a daughter, Melinda, and her husband Ben
Allison of Ashburn, VA, and a son, Greg Hull, and his wife Martha, of
Hankins, NY, and their three children William, Alex, and Chloe.
Besides being an accomplished pianist and an avid reader, Jo Ann was
considered an excellent cook. She took special joy in preparing elaborate
meals for her friends and family. Although primarily a homemaker, she
found time to tutor inner city youth in Washington, DC, as well as serve
on the outreach committee of Trinity United Methodist Church of McLean,
VA.
She treasured the time she was able to spend with her children and
grandchildren, especially after her health declined and severely
restricted her activities. To the amazement of all who encountered her,
she remained optimistic despite 40 hospitalizations and 20 surgeries. Her
slender frame and sweet smile belied great faith and considerable strength
of character. She donated her organs and certain tissues so that others
might achieve restored health.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 21st, at 4:00 p.m. at
the Cumby Funeral Service chapel, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point, NC,
with Allen E. Barnes of Carnation, WA, a devoted family friend,
officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes
Association,`P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

USE SOLAR LIGHTS INSIDE

Email from a friend to use your outdoor solar lights during a power failure:

I have a friend who used her solar lights inside at night when her current was off during the hurricane. She stuck them in a jar or bottle and said they gave off plenty of 'free light'. She put one in each room and would put them back outside in the daytime and bring them in at night as long as the current was off. They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries. Bring in a solar light one night and test it.

Due to a thunderstorm, we lost power for about 5 hours. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, flashlights, etc. We looked outside, and noticed our solar lights shining brightly all around our patio, stairs, dock, etc. They were beautiful. My wife walked outside, and brought several of the solar lights inside.
We stuck the solar light pipes into plastic drink bottles containers and they made the nicest, brightest, safest, lighting you could ever imagine.
We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, etc. There was plenty of light. There are all types of solar lights available. We bought ours at Harbor Freight. We put them all around our yard. They look nice and they do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights around our doorway.
The lights we have fit into the small (20 oz) water bottles and they also fit into most of the larger liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, you can put a few of the pretty colorful "flat marbles" that they put in aquariums, and vases. (you can also use sand, aquarium gravel, etc., whatever you have available).
The lights we have were perfect inside our home. They burn all night long if you need them.
The next day, you just take your solar lights back outside and they will instantly recharge and be ready for you to use again any time you need them.
Perfect for power outages, hurricanes, etc. I never thought of it and now you don't have to. So go buy 3-4 solar yard lights--they're cheap!

FULLERTON NATIVE MARGUERITE NOUTARY

I can't find her in the FUHS directory. She may have gone to Catholic school, but she is a Fullerton heroine that we should know about and honor.

Noutary, Marguerite Lea, Lt. Colonel US Army, 94, passed away on December 6, 2011.

Resident of Fullerton for 94 years. Born in Fullerton in 1917, she was one of the original settling families, of the Fullerton/Orange County area who migrated from France in 1905. There were many life-time memories of the 1899 Historical Landmark home that she was born in and lived her entire life. After completing her education at Orange County School of Nursing in 1940, she joined the Army Nurse Corps where she served for 36 years. Marguerite is a retired Lieutenant Colonel with honors and served in World War II, Burma, India and China. Upon her return, she worked for 41 yrs. as a Director of the State Hospital in Norwalk and Department of Health in Psychiatry of California.
Marguerite was very active and social. She loved to travel, attend lectures, oil paint, taught French and Spanish to others, enjoyed her garden, and always wanted to challenge her mind to learn new things throughout her life. She volunteered one day a week at the St. Francis Home for 30 years, was a Native Daughters/Grace Parlor member for 39 years, a Foundation Board Member Donor at St. Jude Hospital, member at St. Mary's Parish, donor to the Fullerton Arboretum, member and donor to Orange County Historical Society and Cal State Fullerton.
Her family and friends will always remember Marguerite for her zest and passion for life, her laugh, intelligence, support, love and all that she did to help and give to others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She will be honored with a full military funeral.
Mass will be 10 AM Thurs., Dec. 15th at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 400 West Commonwealth Ave, Fullerton. Burial at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange. McAulay & Wallace Mortuary, Fullerton.

(Here is an email message I received Nov 18, 2011 from Craig Mathews, Pow Wow class rep for the class of '67. He and his wife volunteer to take pictures at the Pow Wow luncheons. Congrats to Andrea.)

I am proud to announce that Andrea is the Missouri State Bowling Assn 2012 Hall of Fame inductee for Meritorious Service.
She will be inducted into the Hall on June 2, 2012 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO at the State Awards Banquet.
Andrea had no idea that I put her name in nor that she was picked until it was announced at her traveling league yesterday. I was lucky enough to capture her reaction to the news.
Comments she made, "What? What? Oh no! Oh no!" Have no clue on the "Oh no" comment.
Needless to say, she was surprised and very honored.
Included is the picture sent to state for their program.

Cate, Jr., Leland L. Aug. 10, 1934 - Oct. 28, 2011 Our beloved Lee, 77, died October 28 in Whittier, CA. A professional printer, Lee was Director of Printing and Publications for the state of Alabama. With his son, Gregory, they owned and operated Oxford Impressions in Whittier. After retirement, he worked for Manheim Auto Auction, Anaheim. Born in Pasadena, CA, Lee was educated at Fullerton High School (1952) and Long Beach State College (1960), graduating with a degree in Business Administration. He served in the National Security Agency (NSA) as a courier attached to President Eisenhower. Married to Beverly McCoy in 1958, he is survived by his wife; son Greg (Melinda Ann); daughter Melinda Lee Gilbert; grandchildren Andrew and Stephanie Cate, Monica and Matthew Gilbert; sister, Carolyn Konrad. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Sr., and his mother, Margaret. Lee was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America. Proud to be one of four generations of eagle scouts in his immediate family; he was awarded the Silver Beaver for his commitment to scouting and community.
Devoted to his family and friends, Lee loved camping, fishing, hiking at Yosemite and telling stories to his grandchildren. He and Bev were Meals On Wheels volunteers.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2:30pm at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary, 902 N. Harbor Blvd., Fullerton.

HENRY BANUELOS , FUHS 1963

Banuelos, Henry, of Garden Grove, CA, passed away on October 23, 2011 at the age of 67. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Jackie; daughters, Lorraine Velarde and Julie Slama; sons-in-law, Ray and Garrett; grandchildren, Robert, Elena, Ryan and Casey; and step-granddaughter, Sienna.
Henry was raised in Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton Union High School in 1963. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He retired in 1997 after working 29 years for Ford Aerospace, later Loral/Lockheed Martin.
Henry was an avid softball team player and manager, desert enthusiast and off-roader, and best grandfather ever.
A memorial tribute will be held on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd., Westminster, CA.

Cheryl “Cheri” Margaret Cone Morse
February 15, 1938 – September 28, 2011
Cheri Morse passed away unexpectedly while on the trip of her
lifetime through the South Pacific with John, her husband of 52 years
by her side. Cheri lived her 73 years to the fullest, living in and
traveling to every corner of the world.
Cheri was born in Orange County, California, to Carroll and Myrtle Cone.
She lived her childhood in Fullerton until she went away to Purdue
University in Indiana where she met John, the love of her life. Cheri
and John lived all over our country and the world for John’s work.
Cheri was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will
be missed more than we can say.
She was an artist in the mediums of quilting, sewing, cake
decorating, and international gourmet cuisine among others.
Cheri is survived by her husband John Morse and her three children and their spouses: Chris and Brent McClure, Adam and Suzie Morse, and Dave and Amy Morse, as well as 7
grandchildren. Cheri was preceded in death by her sons John David and Michael Steven.
A celebration of Cheri’s’ life will be held on Saturday,
October 22nd at 3:00 pm, at their home in Ridgefield, WA.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer
Society in the name of her son John David Morse, or to the
Peace Corps in Vanuatu in the name of Sara Lightner.

Maple School is the only original schools of the Fullerton Elementary School District still operating. Chapman Avenue Elementary School, Ford Avenue Elementary School, and Wilshire Junior High School are all now history. Wilshire has been absorbed by Fullerton College (FJC to you alumni). Maple and the community surrounding the school have strong neighborhood as well as family ties.

Received your e-mail and thank you. Unfortunately, Roger lost his 20-yr. battle with prostate CA on 08/12/11. He always looked forward to the luncheons and spoke so fondly of his high school years and friends that he made (some lifetime). 40, of Costa Mesa, Calif. died on Tuesday evening, August 30, after being the victim of a homicide when stabbed by an assailant down the street from his home. The suspect is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. Steven was pronounced dead on arrival at Western Medical Center. The son of Steven and Deborah DePhillips, they nicknamed him "Skeebo." Steven was born in Anaheim, California on February 17, 1971 at Anaheim Memorial Hospital. He is survived by a daughter, two brothers and a sister, Shaun, Daniel and Summer, 11 nieces and nephews and 10 aunts and uncles.
A graduate of Fullerton High School in 1989, Steven's goal was to pursue a career in computer drafting. Unfortunately he struggled with the disease of drug addiction for the last 15 years of his life. When his daughter Katharine Olivia Gregory, now 6-years-old, was born it seemed to breathe a new life into him as he adored her and would do anything for her. Steven really tried to turn his life around after she was born. He was a fun loving person and would do anything he could to help people. He grew up playing baseball in the East Fullerton Little League and then Pony/Colt before high school. He was also a star quarterback for the Placentia/Yorba Linda Junior All American football teams until high school where he received many awards including scholar athlete in 1987. He was actively pursuing a college scholarship for sports, but sadly entered a world of addiction.
A good daddy, great athlete and a loving person, Steven was admired and loved by many though mostly unaware how much he positively influenced some of the people in his life. While he felt the only person who loved him was his daughter, this just isn't true.
A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. on September 14, at Rose Hills Memorial Park at 3888 Workman Mill Road in Whittier at gate 17. A reception will immediately follow at the home of Steven's parents Mr. and Mrs. Jay Werbil from 3 to 6 p.m. at 112 N. Roosevelt Ave., Fullerton.

JOHN DOUGLAS YARBROUGH, FUHS 1974?

Yarbrough, John Douglas, passed away on September 5, 2011. He was born on May 17, 1956 in Fullerton, CA. He graduated from Fullerton High School. Throughout his youth and into adulthood he led the California Life; surfing the Pacific Coast, and skiing the Sierra. He excelled in both, and loved the great outdoors.
John served in the US Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. His fondest memories was his assignment in Aviano Italy where he made many good Italian friends. He invited his dad to join him to ski the Alps.
John had a special knack for making people laugh, and his friends and family remember his special good spirits and acts of kindness. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas and is survived by his mother, Jane; brothers, Mark and Claude; sister, Jane Shreve; niece, Natalie; nephews, Michael, lan and Connor; brother-in-law, Mike Shreve; sister-in-law, Robyn Yarbrough; and his beloved Annie
John loved music, played the guitar and was an avid reader of history. He was a regular patron of the Fullerton Library; sometimes guilty of overdue books.

HONOR FOR MIKE JOHNSON, FUHS 1958

Michael H. "Mike" Johnson Sr. was presented a plaque for his service on the Airport Noise and Safety Commission from February 2006 to February 2011 by Fullerton Mayor F. Richard Jones. Mike is a 1958 graduate from Fullerton Union High School and is currently the Pow Wow class representative for his class.

Mike has been volunteering for most of his adult life. Mike has been a volunteer adult Scout leader where he has received several awards for his service. He was also a vice commandant and chaplain for the Joseph H Pendelton Marine Corps League, a Young Marine Volunteer leader, an Army Community Service volunteer and an American Red Cross disaster relief volunteer.
Mike retired from the military after more than 28 years of service (6 years service in the United States Marine Corps and 22 years in the United States Army).

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Larry Dale Joyce passed away peacefully on August 15, 2011 with Mary, his wife of 53 years at his side.
Larry was born in Crosby, North Dakota on March 23, 1936, the oldest child of Patrick and Angeline Joyce. The family moved from North Dakota, to Washington and eventually settled in Fullerton where Larry attended St. Mary's, Fullerton High School and Fullerton Community College. Larry met the love of his life, Mary through the Valedor Club at St. Mary's Church in October of 1957. They married on June 14, 1958 and shared 53 years together, raising a family, and traveling the world.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his seven children and their spouses, Teresa (Brian), Cynthia (Nans), Michael, Daniel, Patrick, Kevin (Melanie) and Robert (Roslyn); seven grandchildren - Brian, Camille, Shane, Erin, Collin, Alex and Wyatt; his sisters, Patricia Schade, Gloria Adams and Beverly Joyce- Suneson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Angeline Joyce; his sister, Dolores (Dolly) Joyce; and his brother, Thomas Joyce.

The venue for the FUHS Good Old Boys Luncheon is being held at Heroes Bar and Grill 125 West Santa Fe Avenue in Fullerton (714 738 4356). We do this the second Friday of the month at 12:00 (Noon). Pay as you go bar and food, very informal, and the stories get better every month. Hopper, Jackie Mabel passed away Friday morning, July 29, 2011. She was 65 years old. She was born on April 2, 1946 to Leonard H. and Meril J. Payne Lago in Ashtabula, OH and moved to Yorba Linda in her teens. She attended Fullerton High School where she was on the Drill Team. She married in December of 1963 and dedicated her life to raising her three sons, Tom, Rick and Tim. After her divorce in 1987, she attended nursing school and served her community as an LVN. Jackie was always the life of the party. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook. She enjoyed being with family and playing games. Along with her sons, she is survived by her daughters-in-law, Tasha, Diane and Rebecca; her grandchildren, Josh, Allie, Jaime, Amanda, Jackie, John, Jacob, Troy and Jordan. She had three great-grandchildren, Emery, Brooklyn and Mason. She has two loving brothers, Mike and his wife Louise and Tim and his wife Torri, plus countless nieces and nephews and dear friends. Cynthia and Dick Foster were both born and raised in Fullerton. High school sweethearts, they have been married for 57 years. Dick has degrees in electronics engineering from Stanford and UCLA. He spent 34 years in the military electronics industry, retiring in 1991 as president of Interstate Electronics Corporation. Cynthia has an Economics degree from Cal State Fullerton. She worked twenty three years as a manager with Pacific Bell, taking early retirement in 1988 so she could study ornamental horticulture at Cal Poly Pomona.

Both Dick and Cynthia have been involved in community service for many years.Dick became involved in United Way in the late 1970's when he was recruited by Carl Karcher to serve as electronics industry chair for the Orange County United Way Campaign Cabinet , a post he held for two years. He continued with United Way for over 15 years, twelve of which he served on their Board of Directors, including two years as treasurer and two as chairman of the board. Dick is a past chair of the Disneyland Community Service Awards committee and a past member of the Fullerton Public Library Foundation Board.

Cynthia has been a member of the Arboretum Gala Committee since the second year, including one year as chair. She also served as treasurer of the Fullerton Public Library Foundation Board for several years. She recently became a member of the Board of Trustrees of the Fullerton College Foundation, which was started by her late father, Joe Johnson and Dr. Lynn Sheller, then president of the college.

Dick and Cynthia are long time members of the Friends of the Arboretum and are currently members of the Chaparral Society. He also served two four -year terms as a city-appointed member of the Arboretum Commission. (Pat Hopping convinced him to apply for the seat in a conversation at a Midsummer Night in the Garden some twelve years ago!) He is currently the immediate Past President of the Friends, a member of the Board Executive Committee and Speaker's Bureau.

WILLIAM ALBERT HOUSER, FUHS 1951

Houser, William Albert, 79 years old, passed away peacefully at Valley Crest Residential Care, Sunday, July 10. 2011. William was born in Anaheim, but grew up in Fullerton, known as "Billy" to friends and family. He joined the Navy in his senior year at Fullerton High School, and served as a dental technician for four years in San Diego. He married his wife Nellie in 1951 and they had two children, Leslie Ann and William Michael. In 1954, he joined the Fullerton Fire Department and promoted in the ranks to become Fire Chief in 1978. Chief Bill Houser retired in 1984. Additionally, he was chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Fullerton Elks, a Shriner and a Mason with the Anaheim Blue Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Charles; two sisters, Laura Ball and Eva Mae Wells; and grandson, Jesse Rolsheim. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Nellie; son, William Michael and his wife, Donna; daughter, Leslie and her husband Richard Rolsheim and their son, Jonathan Rolsheim; brothers-in-law, Ben Francis, John Francis and his wife Juanita, Ed and his wife Carol, Garland and his wife Marion; sisters-in-law, Ellen Guinn and Marjorie Francis; and many nieces and nephews and their families. A service will be held in Fullerton, CA at 12:00 noon at Wilshire Community Church, 212 East Wilshire, July 30th. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer's Association . Our family would like to thank Valley Crest for the loving and dignified care William received during his stay there.

The Indiana Jones of teacher librarians
After losing her job to budget cutbacks, teacher librarian continues to be a resource through history book

A few summers ago, when Fullerton Union High School decided to make space for a new office by moving the school's archives, Diane Oestreich decided to do a little digging.
The school's librarian since 1994, Oestreich was keen to find a place where the archives could be properly preserved. Eventually, she stored the more than three dozen boxes in the library's office and workroom.

But as she explored each box, Oestreich realized she had a treasure on her hands.
Club scrapbooks from decades past; minutes from student body meetings; yearbooks; newspaper photographs and stories starting in 1913 -- and all collected under the stewardship of Oestreich's predecessors, a string of school librarians.
"There were so many wonderful things that made the history come alive," says Oestreich, who graduated Fullerton Union in 1964. "It was like a little treasure hunt."
It was also an opportune discovery for Oestreich.
Ten years ago she began researching and writing a history of her alma mater to complement a book covering the first 50 years of the school's history (A History of the Fullerton Union High School and Fullerton Junior College 1893-1943 by former district superintendent Louis E. Plummer).
Oestreich's book project, along with her efforts to digitize the school's newspaper archives and the creation of a DVD about the school's history, was Oestreich's contribution to what she hoped would become a living resource for students, staff and alumni. She has spent her summers and off-time researching and interviewing those connected with the school's history.
"I just felt I wanted to leave a legacy," says Oestreich, a resident of Orange who grew up mostly in Fullerton.
But then Oestreich became a victim of school budget cuts.
Districts across Orange County have had to make painful decisions about what programs to pare down, and the unfortunate consequence for students has been the elimination or suspension of teacher librarian positions – the heart of the school library.
In Oestreich's case, her district informed her in the spring of 2010 that her job had been suspended. She then applied for one of two librarian positions the district created to oversee its six regular high schools. But Oestreich says she was told she wouldn't be "a good fit."
She was told this after working 16 years as a teacher librarian at FUHS, and more than two decades as a school librarian.
She was eventually reassigned to teach English, which Oestreich, a former German teacher, had never taught. But after doing the job last fall, and after a stint as a substitute teacher in the spring, Oestreich decided to opt for early retirement.
We rarely hear of educators like Oestreich because they typically work behind the scenes.
Yet teacher librarians are that crucial link between students and the wealth of knowledge that school libraries can provide.
"The information or technology - whatever it was - I was there to help them. I was their advocate," says Oestreich of her students.
"...I was like a coach to help them move forward and get their job finished."
So even though it took years to complete the book, Oestreich doggedly pursued her goal, using her own money and donations from alumni (like Newport Beach resident Penny (Hineman) McManigal, who was Fullerton Union's student body president in 1954) to publish it.
Last month, she received the first copy of "The History of Fullerton Union High School 1893-2011." In it, she details events that unfolded while she was on campus, such as the 1996 discovery of a long rumored fresco on the west wall of the school's Plummer Auditorium (the fresco had been painted over in late 1930s after complaints from the community), as well as highlights of notable alumni.
Russell Chambers, for example, was a 1932 graduate of Fullerton Union before a military career that inspired the naming of the destroyer escort, the USS Chambers. His story is chronicled by Oestreich. As Fullerton Union's librarian, Oestreich saw how the multi-media version of school history that she showed to students was an inspiration for class pride. She hopes her book will have a similar effect.
Like her predecessors at Fullerton Union, she's proven that when it comes to finding the real treasure in a school library you don't have to look beyond the librarian.

From 1939 to 1997 this mural on the west wall of Plummer Auditorium was covered in layers of paint. Commissioned as a Public Works of Art project during the Great Depression and completed by Charles Kassler and an assistant, the fresco was controversial during its time. Fullerton Union High School's board of trustees decided to cover up the fresco with paint in 1939. In 1996, FUHS guidance counselor Cheri Hansen organized a study to test whether the mural was under the layers of paint and experts confirmed that the fresco was there. In 1997, the district launched a community restoration project, which revealed a fresco depicting early California and Orange County history, featuring Orange County settler Jose Antonio Yorba.

Lakeman, Clifford Dale, passed away July, 12, 2011, in Placentia, California. He was born, October 14, 1914, to Jacob and Bertha Leep Lakeman. A lifelong Fullerton resident he attended local schools and Fullerton College. A World War II veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater. He owned and operated Lakeman's Market on E. Commonwealth Avenue for many years, beginning in 1923. He is survived by daughter Judy Hudnall (Buck), son "Bud" Lakeman (Paula), 6 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, brother, Boyd Lakeman and his constant companion, Barbara Robison. He was preceded in death by wife, Dorothy Lakeman, brother, Floyd Lakeman and sister, Thelma Boisseranc. Graveside service will be 10 am Friday July 15 at Loma Vista Memorial Park, Fullerton. My name is Elizabeth Keverian and I recently graduated from FUHS in 2010. I am currently studying film at Chapman University and just found out that I have been accepted to study abroad in the Spring. The program I hope to participate in is called Semester at Sea, which means I will get to sail around the world, visiting 11 different countries over a span of a few months! I apologize for the delay in updating you. I am afraid, my news is not good.

Dad passed away in the early evening of Monday July 4th. Seems fitting for him don't you think?
He fought a good fight. And he went at the cancer the way he does everything, head on and sure of his decision.
Dad knew he had an uphill battle against pancreatic cancer, and that surgery, while extremely risky was his only option. He made it through surgery, but simply wasn't strong enough to recover.
I was with him and I know he suffered very little.
Please remember him as we do, a funny, caring guy, filled with opinions and conversation.
There will be a small family gathering in Oregon on Sunday. Dad's ashes will be combined with Mom's and dispersed in a private location. I would love stories to share with the grandchildren and great grandchildren if you have them, please email to me.
We aren't seeking donations, but Dad always donated to childhood cancer.

It was a 10 hour surgery with some good results. Cancer was limited to the tumor in the pancreas, with no extension to lymph nodes, liver or bowel. There was a great deal of scar tissue to clean up around previous surgery sites which took a long time. Going to ICU for the night, and probably tomorrow as well.

From Shonna on July 2:
Looks like it was the best of all possible situations. Wait and see on suture sites, infection, etc. but the surgery itself went better than expected... nice change
With any luck we have passed a hurdle. I can't lie, yesterday afternoon was grim at best. The doctor's have a fragile balance between too much fluid and not enough. Dad needed assistance breathing and they were able to use a positive pressure mask to force air into his lungs rather than intubating him.
Neither is fun. Hopefully he won't remember it, but Mark is pretty sure Dad is going to blame me.... But that's ok, he made it, so what's to complain about right? HAHA
The combination of drugs and exhaustion have really taken it out of him. He is sleeping today, and hard as it is, Mark and I are limiting our visits to a couple hours, and we sit behind him so he won't try and stay awake. I know some of you are anxious to call or visit, but please, not yet. He is still in intensive care and will be for the whole weekend.
Again, thanks for the good wishes and prayers, the doctor is very impressed with his improvement, and how fast he is healing. Plus, his insides are functioning already and the doc didn't expect that for a couple more days. Keeping true to form, he's early and without any advanced notice!

Eugene “Gene” Marshal Matthews
Eugene “Gene” Marshal Matthews, 75, of Corvallis passed away July 4 from complications of pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Santa Ana, Calif. He met and married Dixie Marie in 1957; she preceded him in death in 1995.
He served in the U.S. Army, played baseball, and retired as a police officer for the city of Fullerton, Calif., and moved to his beloved Oregon.
He is survived by daughter Shonna and husband Richard of California; son Mark and wife Debbie of Oregon; grandchildren Rich, Jennifer and Jacquie of California, and Emma, Erin, Tessa, Sam and Nick of Oregon; great-grandchildren Nick and Cami of California, and Myah, Hudson and Madi of Oregon; sister Corallee and husband Bill of Indiana; and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.
He never met a stranger; his heart was big, warm and welcoming. He truly loved being a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He had a zest for life, enjoyed fishing, camping and golfing, and was a wonderful companion and a true patriot. He will be missed and forever loved!
The family is not seeking donations, but says Gene always donated to Children’s Cancer Research.

'Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you- get back to us quickly. I have
something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning
with 809. We did not respond. Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND 876 from the U.S. or Canada .
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL
AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US ... This is pretty scary,
especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on.
They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family
member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or
to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, oetc..
In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there
are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these
calls.
If you call from the U.S. or Canada , you will apparently be charged a
minimum of $2425 per-minute.
And you'll also get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to
keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.
WHY IT WORKS:

The following e-mail message was forwarded to me from an alum. I have Richard Gregory's permission to post his comment that came with the public announcement.

FULLERTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- RMG Capital Corporation (“RMG”) (Pink sheets:RMGC.pk - News) and Opus Bank announced today that they have entered into a merger agreement pursuant to which Opus Bank will acquire RMG and its bank subsidiary, Fullerton Community Bank (collectively “Fullerton”), in an all cash transaction. Under the terms of the agreement, Opus Bank will pay a total of $50 million in cash to the holders of RMG’s common stock. The RMG, Fullerton, and Opus Bank Boards of Directors have unanimously approved the terms of the agreement and voted in favor of the transaction. The terms of the merger agreement also call for Opus Bank to assume all of RMG’s obligations with respect to trust preferred securities issued by RMG’s trust subsidiaries and the outstanding series of RMG preferred stock, which series is to be redeemed in accordance with its terms.

I didn't find Betty in the FUHS database so I am guessing at the year that she graduated.

Noe, Betty Lou, 72 years old, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday May 31, 2011 in Indio California. Cause of death was Alzheimer's. Born September 24, 1938 in Visalia, California. Parents Frank and Reba Feazel. She was a graduate of Fullerton High School. She was a resident of Orange County for 65 years. Betty loved camping, singing, family outings. She worked as a preschool teacher for 20 years, full and part time. She loved her place of employment in Children's House, a church affiliated school and the comradery with the personnel. She was a God fearing woman who knew where she was going. She was survived by her husband, Robert A. Noe, daughter-in-law, Terri Bose, adopted daughter, Pat Monroe, two grand children, Tanner Noe age 21 and Chasen Noe age 19 years. Brother Bob Feazel age 79 years, sister-in-law Dorothy Feazel, niece Cheryl Cre and Linda Darlington. Bettie was predeceased by her son Steven A. Noe in 1998. Funeral service will be held at Fairhaven Cemetery and Waverly Chapel at 1702 Fairhaven Ave, Santa Ana, CA., Thursday June 9, 2011, viewing 10:00 am to noon, services and burial to follow. Reception at Taft Ave Community Church, 1350 E. Taft Ave, Orange, CA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association . She was a wonderful wife, Mom and Grandparent.

It is with great sadness that I send this e-mail. This afternoon I received a phone call from Dr. Paul LoCascio (FUHS-57), a FUHS buddy, telling me of the passing of our long time good friend Gary Tavan (FUHS-57). Gary and I were friends from Wilshire Jr. High on and his loss brings me much heart ache. As Paul told me, Gary and Jeanette were watching TV together Sunday evening and she went to bed while Gary decided to watch for a bit longer. During the night she discovered that Gary had not come to bed. Going in to check on him she found he had passed away.

I will let you know about a memorial service as soon as I am made aware of it. Keep Jeanette and their daughter in your prayers.

Tavan, Gary S., passed away peacefully on May 15, 2011. He was 72 years old. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jeannette; his daughter, Michele; 2 grandchildren, Ella (9) and Joe (7); his sister, Gail Ehmann; and niece, Kerry and nephew, Tod. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He was born in Ventura, CA and spent his entire life in Southern California. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1957 and then went on to Fullerton Jr. College and Cal Poly Pomona. He was a star football player at all 3 schools. After college, he went into the Army Reserves and then owned a commercial landscape company for 30 years. He loved football and was a devoted fan to UCLA and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. His other loves included rugby, hunting, skiing, going to the gym, and taking long walks with his wife and friends at the beach. His joyful sense of humor and fun-loving spirit brought many smiles to a lot of faces, especially those of his daughter and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

FRED LAE, FUHS 1947

Lae, Fred A., of Fullerton, CA peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 17th, holding the hand of his beloved wife of over 50 years, Kay Lae. Fred was 81 years old. He lived in Fullerton, CA for over 60 years and in Windsor, CA for the last 19 years. He is survived by his wife, his sister Alice and brother Lewis. He is also survived by his niece, nephew, stepson and stepdaughter, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Fred was a veteran of the US Army, serving in Korea. He was injured serving his country leaving him a paraplegic from the age of 21 and went on to live a fulfilling life despite his injuries. Fred enjoyed traveling, gardening, time with his family and dining out at some of his favorite restaurants. He had a great sense of humor, duty to his country and will be missed and fondly remembered by his friends and family. Fred will be laid to rest at Loma Vista in Fullerton, CA at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 23rd, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Paralyzed Veterans of America are preferred. www.pva.org

I checked the FUHS database, but couldn’t find any of the siblings listed. I emailed Joan Grigsby Sorsabal, the Pow Wow class rep for her class of 1948, to see if she had any information about him. She found him in her annuals in the class of 1947.

Fred's grand-daughter sent me the following email message. If you want to get in touch with her, she gave me her phone number.

I am Fred Lae's oldest grand-daughter, Laura Manning. I saw your note on the Fullerton Union High School.

I found out that Fred did not finish high school, however he went to Fullerton Union High School. My grandma is not computer literate (yet) and I told her I would print off copies of what I find on the internet for her. I wrote the obituary for her and got it e-mailed to the Register.

Carter, Curtis James "Jim", born May 10, 1934, long time Placentia resident, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Jim was born in Lisbon, North Dakota then moved to Fullerton, CA. A graduate of Fullerton High School class of 1953, Jim went on to serve in the US Navy, and is a veteran of the Korean War. In 1959 he married Eva Russo and together raised three boys, Frank, David and James. After a 39-year career with Bank of America, Jim retired. After losing his wife in 2000, he decided to move to Wright City, MO, built his dream home and enjoyed his days fishing in his own pond. Jim is survived by his three boys, their wives and seven grandchildren. Jim (a man of few words but great integrity) will be remembered by his family as "the greatest man we ever knew". A Rosary Service will be held at McAulay Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton, Monday, May 2 at 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Joseph Placentia, Tuesday, May 3, 2010, 10:30 am.

Wilbanks, Melvin Valoid, 86, born, March 13, 1925, passed away April 24, 2011.
He was married for 62 years to Grace A. Wilbanks; he graduated in 1943 from Fullerton Union High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He is survived by his daughters, Sandra and Barbara; son, William; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kay. Graveside service will be at 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Memory Garden Memorial Park.

KATHERINE STUTSMAN OLMSTED, FUHS 1939

Olmsted, Katherine S., passed away peacefully on Friday, April 22, 2011 in Fullerton, California after a brief illness. She was 89. Born in Missouri to Ward and Bessie Stutsman, Katherine and her family moved to Orange County when she was 14 years old. She graduated from Fullerton High School in 1939. Katherine was a member of P.E.O., a Philanthropic, Educational Organization, in Fullerton. She was a member of Eastside Christian Church in Fullerton for more than 40 years. She is survived by her daughter, Karen and her family; granddaughter, Marie; sister, Phyllis Russell; and her loving extended family. Her husband of 67 years, Karl A. Olmsted, died on March 5, 2011. She will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife and mother, engaging conversationalist and accomplished bridge player. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary Chapel, 902 N. Harbor Blvd. in Fullerton. BOGUS MESSAGES FROM ALUMNI JUNCTION?

Someone asked me a couple of weeks ago if I knew anything about this new service called Alumni Junction. I didn't, other than having received an offer to join.

The other day, I got a message from Alumni Junction that a friend had posted a message on my profile. When I clicked on the link, it wanted me to join before being able to read the message. I sent an e-mail to my friend's personal e-mail account to find out what he wanted to tell me. He said he had no knowledge of Alumni Junction and had not tried to e-mail me.

I don't think this is a good way for Alumni Junction to drum up business if that is what is going on. If someone else is trying to steal money from them by mis-directing their membership fees, someone who belongs to this service should warn them. I would have been pretty mad if I had paid money and not found any message waiting for me.

I just got another similar message supposedly from Alumni Junction, saying that a different friend had a message waiting for me.

Buyer beware.

UPDATE: Kurt emailed me that he has just been very busy. Thank Goodness as he is a wonderful web master. He has updated the web site as of 4/13.

I have tried to e-mail Kurt Sineri class of '80, the web master for the below web page, to find out if he is OK because there have been no up-dates on his web page since 2-22-2011. A couple of people have tried to send him their e-mail address to be added to their class alumni list. They contacted me because they had no luck, which alerted me to the problem. I hope we find out that he is fine because he is providing a wonderful service for the school, and especially for the alumni.

The class of ’59 is the next in line to host the luncheon. Anyone in that class can be involved, but no one has volunteered yet. Someone who lives close to Fullerton needs to act as the link to the class (which would entail attending about 4 committee meetings and keeping the class informed and helping rally volunteers from the class to help with tasks like typing or proof-reading or decorating the tables on the day of the luncheon or handing out the name tags, etc). There are several people from other classes who have volunteered for years to do the major tasks, but they need help.

It’s now up to you, the class of ’59. Are you the people who are going to be known as the ones who enjoyed the fruits of others’ labors for years, but who let the alumni down when it was their turn to help? Are we seeing the beginning of the end for this yearly event? Your Pow Wow class rep has done a wonderful job keeping you all informed for years. She always does her part helping the luncheon.
(You know that the volunteers who have helped for years will keep the luncheon going, but is it fair to let only a few do all of the work?)

Hello My Lovely Family and Friends,
First I want to thank you so very much for your concern for me. I am very touched. I also wish to apologize for a generic message to you all. But it seems the best way at the moment to get my message to you.
Things here in Sendai have been rather surreal. But I am very blessed to have wonderful friends who are helping me a lot. Since my shack is even more worthy of that name, I am now staying at a friend's home. We share supplies like water, food and a kerosene heater. We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight, share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful.
During the day we help each other clean up the mess in our homes. People sit in their cars, looking at news on their navigation screens, or line up to get drinking water when a source is open. If someone has water running in their home, they put out sign so people can come to fill up their jugs and buckets.
Utterly amazingly where I am there has been no looting, no pushing in lines. People leave their front door open, as it is safer when an earthquake strikes. People keep saying, "Oh, this is how it used to be in the old days when everyone helped one another."
Quakes keep coming. Last night they struck about every 15 minutes. Sirens are constant and helicopters pass overhead often.
We got water for a few hours in our homes last night, and now it is for half a day. Electricity came on this afternoon. Gas has not yet come on. But all of this is by area. Some people have these things, others do not. No one has washed for several days. We feel grubby, but there are so much more important concerns than that for us now. I love this peeling away of non-essentials. Living fully on the level of instinct, of intuition, of caring, of what is needed for survival, not just of me, but of the entire group.
There are strange parallel universes happening. Houses a mess in some places, yet then a house with futons or laundry out drying in the sun. People lining up for water and food, and yet a few people out walking their dogs. All happening at the same time.
Other unexpected touches of beauty are first, the silence at night. No cars. No one out on the streets. And the heavens at night are scattered with stars. I usually can see about two, but now the whole sky is filled. The mountains are Sendai are solid and with the crisp air we can see them silhouetted against the sky magnificently.
And the Japanese themselves are so wonderful. I come back to my shack to check on it each day, now to send this e-mail since the electricity is on, and I find food and water left in my entranceway. I have no idea from whom, but it is there. Old men in green hats go from door to door checking to see if everyone is OK. People talk to complete strangers asking if they need help. I see no signs of fear. Resignation, yes, but fear or panic, no.
They tell us we can expect aftershocks, and even other major quakes, for another month or more. And we are getting constant tremors, rolls, shaking, rumbling. I am blessed in that I live in a part of Sendai that is a bit elevated, a bit more solid than other parts. So, so far this area is better off than others. Last night my friend's husband came in from the country, bringing food and water. Blessed again.
Somehow at this time I realize from direct experience that there is indeed an enormous Cosmic evolutionary step that is occurring all over the world right at this moment. And somehow as I experience the events happening now in Japan, I can feel my heart opening very wide. My brother asked me if I felt so small because of all that is happening. I don't. Rather, I feel as part of something happening that much larger than myself. This wave of birthing (worldwide) is hard, and yet magnificent.

(I finally found my newspaper that had the one line obit. I couldn't find the obit on-line. Evidently the Omega Society obits don't get put on-line. I typed above what I found in the newspaper.)
He had a Fallbrook address starting in 2007.

He attended many Pow Wow luncheons, but stopped coming in 2008.

Gerry Crowley Campbell and Ken Sigmund (Pow Wow class reps for the class of 1943) think that this is "our" Tom.

Can anyone confirm this?

NANCY MUNGER POLTE, FUHS 1948

Polte, Nancy Jean December 31, 1930-February 17, 2011 Nancy was born in Hollywood, CA. to Don and Ruth Munger on December 31, 1930. The family moved to Yorba Linda in 1931. Nancy was raised and went to elementary school in Yorba Linda. She graduated from Fullerton High School in 1948.. .the same High School her parents attended 25 years prior. Nancy met her future husband, Ernest A. Polte, while enrolled at Fullerton Junior College in the fall of 1948. After Ernie graduated from Stanford University they were married in June, 1951. This was soon followed by the births of 3 sons, Larry, John and Jeff. The Polte family moved from Fullerton back to Yorba Linda in 1961. After Ernie's successful teaching/coaching career (Water Polo and Swimming) at Fullerton Junior College, Nancy and Ernie eventually moved to San Clemente in 1992. Retirement life was good until Nancy was first diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 10 years ago. Despite her gradual physical decline caused by this insidious disease, Nancy maintained an inner strength and dignity of spirit until her final day on February 17, 2011. Nancy is survived by her husband, Ernie (of almost 60 years) and by her 3 sons, Larry (and wife Joy) of Placerville, CA., John of San Clemente, and Jeff (and wife Robin) of Pt. Hueneme, CA. Nancy is also survived by her sister, Joyce Smith, her nephew, Brad, her niece Beverly, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Nancy Jean Polte's primary goal in life was to be the best mother and wife she could be. She succeeded! She taught us to sing, to dance, to laugh, and to fully appreciate the beautiful, simple things in life. Nancy was a gifted artist and seamstress. She gave her all and asked for little in return.. .She was the "wind beneath our wings." Nancy will be dearly missed by all those who knew her. Campus mourns a teacher's passing

Jeff Rupp, a popular Fullerton Union High School teacher, was seriously injured in a traffic collision last month. He died Friday. A memorial has formed at his classroom on campus with messages from fromer and current students.

FULLERTON – Current and former students of Fullerton Union High School created a memorial in front of the campus and another just outside the classroom door. They gathered there Tuesday and remembered, the first day back at school since the popular teacher died.

FULLERTON – The life of the beloved teacher known to his students simply as "Rupp" was celebrated Sunday by close to 1,400 people at the Plummer Auditorium.
Family members, friends, co-workers and current and former students remembered Fullerton Union High School Social Studies teacher Jeff Rupp, 58, who died Feb.11 as a result of injuries suffered in a collision with a car while riding his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle Jan.19.
Rupp, a Vietnam War veteran and district Teacher of the Year in 2007, was honored with songs and words.
Molly Gutman, a 2002 Fullerton Union High graduate, said her former teacher would regularly spend his lunch breaks and after-school hours mentoring students.
Rupp, who began teaching at Fullerton Union High School in 1993, would also stay connected with former students for years they graduated, she said.
"Teaching was not an 8 o'clock to 3 o'clock job to him," Gutman said. "He would do everything, and I do mean everything, to help us."
Army 1st Sgt. Richard Duran, who commands the school's ROTC students, described Rupp as an avid motorcycle enthusiast. The pair rode together to bike shows and rallies.
"We just enjoyed riding with no real destination," Duran said.

Don’t know how many of you remember Kate Smith, but she was one very special woman. Here is her story and her song. Guaranteed to give you 'goose bumps'!
A Real Star.............In case you don't know it, this is the person referred to as "The Fat Lady" in the trite verbalization of "It's not over till the fat lady sings".
Kate Smith was born and grew up in Columbia, Missouri ! In early 1940, Kate Smith, a fiercely patriotic American, and the biggest star on radio, was deeply worried about her country. She asked Irving Berlin if he could give her a song that would re-ignite the spirit of American patriotism and faith. He said he had a song that he had written in 1917, but never used it. He said she could have it.
She sat at the piano & played it and realized how good it was. She called Mr. Berlin and told him that she couldn't take this from him for nothing. So, they agreed that any money that would be made off the song would be donated to the Boy Scouts of America .. Thanks to Kate Smith and Irving Berlin, the Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties.

Frank Sinatra said that when Kate Smith, whom he considered the greatest singer of his age, first sang this song on the radio, a million guys got 'dust' in their eyes and had to wipe the tears the 'dust' caused. If you can watch and listen without 'dust' getting in your eyes, you have no soul.

You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.
It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went.
I know that I lived them all...
And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams... But, here it is..the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise... How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?
I remember well...seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like... But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting gray...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change... Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant... but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.
Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore...it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will..I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!!
But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over...its over....Yes , I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done ,,,,,things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime....
So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!!
Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!
You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for good today and
say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...
and hope that they
appreciate and love you
for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!
'Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after.

James A. Moore III (1935-2011)

On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, after defiantly confronting cancer for nearly four years, the spirit of James A. Moore, III (Jim Moore) climbed into his 1932 Ford Roadster (with that awesome Hemi engine) and departed on his last cruise, this time on the Highway to Heaven. He looked forward to this trip with great anticipation as he would finally meet Jesus, his wonderful pilot throughout this lifetime journey.

Jim was born in Los Angeles in March 1935, the only child of James A. Moore, Jr. and Clara Minor Moore. He was proud to acknowledge that his grandfather, James A. Moore, Sr., was a founding developer of Seattle, Washington. A theater still remains there bearing the Moore name. On his mother's side of the family, Jim was fascinated by his American Indian ancestry. He was a card- carrying tribal member of the Cherokee Nation.

Jim grew up in Fullerton CA and graduated from Whittier College. He was an active member of the U. S. Army Reserve for six years.

Jim's working career in the human resources field began in the mid-1950's with the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and he remained there until 1966 when he accepted a position with CBS/Columbia Records in Santa Maria. Jim was one of the last employees to leave when CBS closed the facility in 1981. He worked briefly for several employers in Santa Maria before deciding to retire. Jim then pursued his hobby of restoring and building vintage automobiles, which brought his creative mind great pleasure as well as many awards. He was a proud member of the San Luis Roadster Club and a car enthusiast until the end.

Survivors include his wife Sharon; much-loved daughters Melissa Allison of Atascadero and Jenifer Hermann and husband Dave; handsome and talented grandsons Zach Spangler and Alex Spangler; and Myrna Moore, mother of his children, all of the Tacoma, WA area; mother-in-law Anne Mawhinney; brother-in- law Rad Mawhinney and his wife Sophia, of Santa Maria; and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was blessed to have been under the care of David L. Palchak, M.D. and his oncology staff. His Hospice caregivers were indeed angels on earth. Special thanks to nurses Donna Silva and Marlene Kelly, and the home health aides who treated Jim with such compassion and respect.

Many, many thanks to the multitude of friends and acquaintances that have made Jim's life so special. He dearly loved all of you.

At Jim's request, there will be no services. Life is short, so remember to love your Creator, treasure your family, and enjoy your friends.

I noticed in the FUHS blogs that there was no mention of my brother's death, Gene Ware, Class of '52. He died from colon cancer in 1995. Gene worked on the '52 Pleiades Year Book as the Art Editor. Many of the hand-drawn pictures in the year book were done by Gene. After serving in the Army and doing duty in Korea, he went to art school graduating with honors. He spent most of his career as an illustrator for Disney. He lived in Dana Point and had two children.

Stevko-Keys, Mary Francis (Pickens), 81 years of age, 2/20/1929 - 12/27/2010. Mary was born in Fullerton, CA and grew up in southern California where she became an accomplished ice skater and later a majorette at Fullerton High School and Community College. She then moved to northern California where she attended UC Berkley and earned her teaching credential through San Jose State University. After graduation, Mary taught Special Education and Kindergarten. Mary enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and had a keen eye for bargains and finding treasures at garage sales. Her kindness and spark for life will be missed by all who knew her. Mary is survived by her husband, Bill Keys; her three children, John, Susan and Annette; and her grandchildren, T. J. Kayla, Alex and Nate. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Stevko. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, December 31, 2010 in Portland, Oregon at the Russellville Park campus. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Celebrate Hope, one of Mary's favorite charities that conducts Christian mission work in Uganda. Tax deductible donations for Celebrate Hope can be made out to the US-based non-profit: Servants, Inc. at 12921 Falcon Rise Road, Tigard, OR 97223.

Reading the Union Tribune this am I ran across an obit that was for Charlie. He died of lymphoma, I forget the exact date. He lived in Rancho Santa Fe, a very exclusive area in San Diego Co. Phil Mikelson lives there. The obit listed some of his accomplishments with G.M. Cad designs including those tail fins of the '50s-60s. They might also have it in the L.A. Times up there. Anyway, I thought you might want to know. Look forward to seeing you at the PowWow in March. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you & yours.

GM chief scored with iconic Cadillac fins
LOS ANGELES Charles M. "Chuck" Jordan, a former General Motors vice president of design whose early successes as a chief designer included the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, a space-age icon with enormous tail fins, has died. He was 83.
Mr. Jordan died of lymphoma Dec. 9 at his home in Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County, said his wife, Sally.
In his 43-year career at General Motors, Mr. Jordan was involved in designing vehicles such as the 1958 Chevy Corvette and the 1968 Opel GT. In 1986, he became the fourth man in GM history to be named vice president of design.
When he retired as design chief in 1992, one design staffer reportedly called Mr. Jordan "the last of the great design dinosaurs."
"He was a strong creative force at GM design, and a passionate leader," Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design, said in a statement.
"It always felt as if every new project he was leading represented a new mountain to climb and was a fresh opportunity to create new trends and statements in automotive design," Welburn said. "He had the charisma and passion of few others in the industry."
A native of Whittier, Calif., near Los Angeles, Mr. Jordan launched his career in 1949 as a junior engineer in GM's design division after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In the 1950s, he moved to the advanced design studio, where he designed noteworthy dream cars for GM's "Motorama" concept showcase, including the 1955 Cameo truck and the 1956 Buick Centurian. He also was instrumental in the design of the XP-700 "Phantom" Corvette concept.
In 1957, the 30-year-old Mr. Jordan, at age 30, assumed the prestigious position of chief designer for Cadillac.
Mr. Jordan, who appeared in the 1996 PBS documentary "America on Wheels," noted in an interview with the Los Angeles Times before the documentary aired that contemporary vehicles lacked the personality of cars in the 1950s.
"People back then were more conscious of cars," he said. "With the new generation, their cars are not as passionate a thing as they were back then. Now, people want minivans. They are driving a lot of trucks. In those days, people were expecting some fabulous cars."
Fins at their extreme
Mr. Jordan once likened the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado's enormous pointed fins to "letting a tiger out of a cage saying 'go!'x"
"The original Cadillac fin was higher than the roof of the car on the coupe," he recalled with a laugh in the Times interview. "But even before the '59 hit the street, we had already completed the '60 design where we cut the fins off. That tells you we recognized that we probably overcooked it.
"But people loved that car. I think they probably love it more today because it was a reflection of that culture back in those days."
In 1962, the year Mr. Jordan was named executive in charge of automotive design, with responsibility for the exteriors of all GM cars and trucks, Life magazine named him one of the 100 most important young men and women in the nation.
Mr. Jordan's positions during his rise through the design ranks included a 1967-70 stint as design director for GM's Opel subsidiary in what was then West Germany. In 1977, he was named director of design for the entire GM design staff.
Mr. Jordan's "impact on the world of automotive design," AutoWeek writer Wes Raynal wrote at the time of Mr. Jordan's retirement in 1992, "is likely to be debated for decades to come."
"For some, he will be remembered best for cars early in his career, most notably the '59 Cadillac," Raynal wrote. "To others, successes like the Pontiac Bonneville and Cadillac Seville. To his critics, the poor-selling Chevrolet Caprice and APV minivans."
Although sensitive to the criticism, Mr. Jordan stressed that there are no hard-and-fast rules in his profession.
"We deal with design, an intangible and emotional subject," he told AutoWeek. "There are no rules or steps to success. It's a matter of opinion. This isn't research or engineering with computer programs and hard data. Words may not communicate it exactly.
"You gotta "You've got to see it and feel it. We deal with emotion."
Won competition at 19
The son of a citrus rancher, Mr. Jordan was born in Whittier on Oct. 21, 1927. He developed an early interest in drawing cars, and his grandmother is said to have supplied him with paper and a pencil during church services so he could sketch on his hymnal.
Mr. Jordan, who began driving pickup trucks in his father's orchards at 11 and bagged groceries at Richard Nixon's family's store while in high school, was a 19-year-old sophomore at MIT when his mother encouraged him to enter the national Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild automobile model design competition sponsored by the Fisher Body Division of GM.
He spent 700 hours on his winning project, which earned him $4,000 and a trip to Detroit.
"I'd always planned on working at Ford," Mr. Jordan, whose childhood hero had been Henry Ford, said in an interview with Newsmakers, a biographical reference source. "If I hadn't won that contest, that's where I'd be."
After retiring from GM, Mr. Jordan volunteered to teach an automotive design class at Valhalla High School in El Cajon and later at La Costa Canyon High School, both in the San Diego area.
"I've done what I'm going to do, and it's a matter of record," he told Automotive News in 2001. "Now I enjoy and want to work with young people. Promoting their creativity and exposing them to the opportunity design offers is very satisfying."
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Jordan is survived by his children, Debra Bryan, Melissa Hall, and Mark Jordan; his sister, Ruth Keneley; his brothers, John and Stan; and four grandsons.

Chuck lived in East Whittier as did I. We exchanged letters during his career. Three things stand out in my memory re. him. One was that all during high school he favored Ford and his car at that time was a green Ford convertable. Two- He lived in Los Angeles County ,as did I. I think he went to FUHS because his neighbors the Milhouse boys went to Fullerton. Third His son felt that GM was not keeping up to the market so he left them and went to work for Mazda? where he was the major designer for the Mazda Miata

I have several items on his history. He was a Quaker in his early days..

Walker, Gordon June 7, 1919 - December 4, 2010 Gordon Walker of Anaheim, died peacefully in his sleep on December 4, 2010, at the age of 91 years. Gordon was born in Buffalo, NY, the youngest child of Albert and Katharine Stauffer Walker. He lived in western New York State until age 7, when his family moved to Beloit, WI. In 1932, his family settled in California, where his parents owned the Twin Olives Ranch in Yorba Linda, raising chickens and oranges. Gordon was a graduate of Fullerton Union High School (Class of '37) and Fullerton Junior College (Class of '39). He attended the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in organic chemistry, and graduating with honors in 1941. While living on the ranch, Gordon was active in Scouting. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and became the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 100 in Placentia. He was proud of his part in forming Senior Scout Troop 13, a forerunner of the Orange County Explorer Scout Program. He was also active in DeMolay. After graduation from Berkeley he went to work for Shell Oil Company in Martinez, CA, as a chemist/petroleum engineer. He was instrumental in developing 100-octane fuel for the Army Air Corps. During World War II, Gordon established a pen-pal relationship with Anne McWhinnie of Glasgow, Scotland. They became engaged through the mail, and as soon after the war as possible, she came to Martinez. On February 4, 1946, just three weeks after her arrival, they were married at the Twin Olives Ranch and returned to Martinez, where they started their family. In 1951, Gordon transferred to a refinery in Southern California. He accepted a position in 1956 with Douglas Aircraft (later McDonnell Douglas), where he specialized in fuels and lubricants. In 1975, he became the Director of the Chemical and Environmental Division of an independent testing laboratory in Los Angeles. Three years later, he rejoined the aerospace industry at General Dynamics, where he headed a group that published all the procedures and materials specifications for the factory's missile production. In 1991, Gordon retired and was kept busy with his family and volunteer work for the American Cancer Society . Although Gordon was a loving and devoted caregiver, his dear wife's dementia had progressed to the point where, in 2002, she had to go into a nursing home, where she still resides. In 2004, Gordon moved to Emerald Court Retirement Residence, where he was very happy and made many new friends. Gordon's greatest accomplishments were being a loving and selfless husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The world has lost a true gentleman and a truly gentle man. He walked the walk as well as talking the talk, and he always led by example. What a legacy he has left us! He was honest and upright, and he left this world being right with his God, his family, and his fellow man. We will miss you, Dad (Grandpa), but we will always carry your strength, your love, your smile, and your laughter with us. He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Anne; five children, Douglas (Joe Brooks), Linda (Bruce Houseman), Keith (Jimi), Alan (Patti) and Craig (Debbie); ten grandchildren, Scott (Alexandra), Bernadette (Billie), Mark (Allison), Emily Beth, Colin, Jeffrey (Malia), Kathryn, Emily Louise, Bradford, and Hannah; and eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Evan, Mikayla, Tyler, Noah, William, Hailey and Madeline; and many extended family members in the United States and Great Britain. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor; and his brother, Matthew. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 838 North Euclid Street, Fullerton, CA on Saturday, December 18, at 11 o'clock. It was with great trepidation that I approached 3704 N Street in Washington on Nov. 10, 1960. I had just been given the assignment of providing protection for the wife of the newly elected president of the United States, and I was about to meet her for the first time.
I soon realized I had little to worry about. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, just 31 years old at the time, was a gracious woman who put me immediately at ease. She was the first lady, but she was also a caring mother; her daughter, Caroline, was nearly 3 years old, and she was pregnant with her second child. Three weeks later, she went into early labor with John Jr., and I followed her through the entire process. It would be the first of many experiences we would have together.
Being on the first lady’s detail was a lot different from being on the president’s. It was just the two of us, traveling the world together. Mrs. Kennedy was active and energetic — she loved to play tennis, water-ski and ride horses. She had a great sense of humor, and we grew to trust and confide in each other, as close friends do.
In early 1963, Mrs. Kennedy shared with me the happy news that she was pregnant again. She had curtailed her physical activities and had settled into a routine at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., for the last few months of her pregnancy. I was on a rare day off when I got the call that she had gone into early labor. I raced to the hospital at Otis Air Force Base, arriving shortly after she did.
The president, who had been in Washington, arrived soon after she delivered their new baby boy, whom they named Patrick Bouvier Kennedy.
When Patrick died two days later, Mrs. Kennedy was devastated. I felt as if my own son had died, and we grieved together.
The following weeks were difficult as I watched her fall into a deep depression. Eventually, it was suggested that she needed to get away. In October 1963 I traveled with her to the Mediterranean, where we stayed aboard Aristotle Onassis’ yacht, the Christina. The trip to Greece, Turkey and Yugoslavia, along with a short stop in Morocco, seemed to be good therapy, and by the time we returned to Washington the light had returned to her eyes.
I was surprised, however, when not long after our return Mrs. Kennedy decided to join her husband on his trip to Texas. It was so soon after the loss of her son, and she hadn’t accompanied the president on any domestic political trips since his election.
Nevertheless, when we left the White House on Thursday, Nov. 21, I could tell that Mrs. Kennedy was truly excited. I remember thinking this would be a real test of her recovery, and that if she enjoyed the campaigning it would probably be a regular occurrence as soon as the 1964 race got into full swing.
The first day of the trip was exhausting. We had motorcades in San Antonio, Houston and finally Fort Worth, where we arrived around midnight. It had been a long day for everyone, and Mrs. Kennedy was drained.
On the morning of Nov. 22, I went to her room at the Hotel Texas to bring her down to the breakfast where President John F. Kennedy was speaking. She was refreshed and eager to head to Dallas. She had chosen a pink suit with a matching hat to wear at their many appearances that day, and she looked exquisite.
The motorcade began like any of the many that I had been a part of as an agent — with the adrenaline flowing, the members of the detail on alert. I was riding on the running board of the car just behind the president’s.
We were traveling through Dallas en route to the Trade Mart, where the president was to give a lunchtime speech, when I heard an explosive noise from my right rear. As I turned toward the sound, I scanned the presidential limousine and saw the president grab at his throat and lurch to the left.
I jumped off the running board and ran toward his car. I was so focused on getting to the president and Mrs. Kennedy to provide them cover that I didn’t hear the second shot.
I was just feet away when I heard and felt the effects of a third shot. It hit the president in the upper right rear of his head, and blood was everywhere. Once in the back seat, I threw myself on top of the president and first lady so that if another shot came, it would hit me instead.
The detail went into action. We didn’t stop to think about what happened; our every move and thought went into rushing the president and Mrs. Kennedy to the nearest hospital.
I stayed by Mrs. Kennedy’s side for the next four days. The woman who just a few days before had been so happy and exuberant about this trip to Texas was in deep shock. Her eyes reflected the sorrow of the nation and the world — a sorrow we still feel today.

Ingraham, George Donald, 75, of Fullerton, California, passed away peacefully in his home on November 22, 2010. Don was born on March 31, 1935 to George and Verna Ingraham. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Comstock of Fremont, California. Don was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend of 50 years, Barbara. Don worked as a Production Planner at Beckman Instruments for 40 years. After retiring, Don and Barbara spent many wonderful vacations traveling and enjoying the ocean and Pismo Beach. Don will be greatly missed by his three children, Don, Vicki and Susan; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. As an active and proud member of BPOE Fullerton Lodge #1993 for 27 years, Don served two terms as Exalted Ruler. Funeral services will be held at McAulay & Wallace Mortuaries in Fullerton on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 11am.

Notice sent out to all retired SS Agents:
“I'm sure you have some info on the book "The Kennedy Detail" that Jerry Blain, in consort with Lisa McCubbin (author) and major input from Clint Hill has written (along with info, documents, photo's, etc., from the majority of Agents still living and the surviving families of deceased Detail Agents). The book was picked up and published by Simon and Schuster, the printed copies were released Tuesday the 2nd of November, with advance copies available at amazon.com.

After the publisher picked up the book, the Discovery Channel filmed a 2 hour program to be aired on The Discovery Channel at 9PM on November 22nd. The Discovery Channel production is a takeoff on the book and during June, former Detail Agents were invited to Dallas, TX for a reunion of sorts and interviews with scenes filmed in Dealey Plaza and the School Book Depository Museum. The Discovery Channel and Jerry Blain selected a number of the former Detail Agents to be reimbursed for their travel to Dallas.
Subsequent to all of this the book was released and Jerry, Lisa and Clint have been at book signings from Boston to the West Coast. Tentative plans are for a book signing to be held in Tampa (Book Store ??) on Jan 27th. Jerry says that they may also include Naples and West Palm Beach locations. All of these schedules are listed (and updated) on Jerry's Blog. Clint and/or Jerry have been filmed and on live interviews with; C-Span, Fox News, the Major Channels, etc.
This past Monday Nov 8th, the Discovery Channel hosted/produced a private advance screening of the filmed production. It was hosted by Georgetown University. The Dean of the School of Library Science, announced the start of the program and after several lead in presentations from the film production company, five Agents were introduced (Retired Agents Hill, Lawson, Blaine, Pontius and Wells) along with Lisa McCubbin, who acted as the moderator, and were seated as a panel on the stage of Gaston Hall, the University's historic auditorium. The hall was filled with approximately 750 attendees including students, press reporters from the 1960's, about 30 or more SS Agents from the Washington area and others. After selected screening portions of the film, the moderator would continue the subject matter being shown with the panel. This was followed by a question and answer session for the attendees and also followed by a book signing session.
The books, several hundred, were sold out before the program began. And after a book signing session, some of the attendees presented the 5"x7" placards, that have been distributed to announce the book nationwide, for autographs of the panel.Monday, prior to the program at Georgetown University, The Director (SS) hosted a lunch in his HQ conference room for the Agents that were in town for the GU program. The 2 hour presentation will be aired on The Discovery Channel, November 22nd at 9 PM. I'm sure some of our retired Agents in FL, as well as other states, are not aware of the schedule and would be interested in viewing the Nov 22nd program. The previewed segments shown at the Georgetown private showing were impressive.”

Royer, Bruce M., 80, of Murrieta, Ca, formally of Fullerton, passed away at home Nov. 7th surrounded by his loving family. Bruce was born and raised in Fullerton where he graduated from Fullerton High School and Fullerton College before serving in the Navy during the Korean War. He started his own landscaping business and won numerous awards for his many accomplishments and his most recent achievement of completing the landscaping at The Colony in Murrieta. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann (Hiltscher); their children, Laurie Dunham (Gary), Rod (Chris), Robin Craig (Paul); 6 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held, 2:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3rd at The First Presbyterian Church, 838 N. Euclid Ave., Fullerton, Ca.

Caplinger, Walter Lewis, 75, of Brea, passed away at home with his family at his side on November 15, 2010. Married to and survived by his beloved wife, Sherry, to whom he had been married 56 years. He is also survived by three children, Cristi (Ron), Cori (Chuck) and Amy (Dave); four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services have been held. I received a phone call from my cousin, Dorothy Skaggs McRoberts, regarding the death of her husband, Ron. He died of a heart failure on Monday, November 8. Private services were held on Thursday, Nov. 11. Ron and Dorothy have resided in Grass Valley, CA for many years. Survivors include Dorothy, daughters Roni Marie and Amy, grandchildren and Ron’s sister, Roberta.

BERTRAND HARRIS, FUHS '29

Harris, Bertrand Cutting "Bert", 98, long-time Fullerton resident, currently of Balboa Island, died November 8, 2010. Bert was born in Boise, Idaho on December 19, 1911. Son of a school principal from Massachusetts and a druggist from the wilds of Deadwood, South Dakota Territory, he reflected his mother's scholarship as well as his dad's out west friendliness. Bert spent his first 10 years in Eagle, Idaho, where his dad had established the Eagle Drugstore in 1908. In 1922 pursuing better educational opportunities for their sons, the family moved to Fullerton where Bert's father opened Harris Drug store at the corner of Harbor Blvd. and Amerige Ave. After graduating from Fullerton High School in 1929 Bert attended the USC school of Pharmacy, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1933. He then joined his dad at Harris Drug store. Always a cheerful conversationalist behind the counter Bert loved to take care of and talk with his customers. In 1941 Bert married Joyce Berry of San Fernando. Fullerton's superintendent had notified Bert to watch out for Joyce, the new elementary school teacher in town. He did, they met, and the rest is history. After selling Harris Drug Store in 1973 he enjoyed part-time work and camaraderie at the Student Health Center of Cal State Fullerton for 10 years until he was 72. Above all, Bert was kind and gentlemanly. He enthusiastically greeted everyone he met and treated everyone with respect and kindness. Bert was an active man, attentive to the weather, current events, and family activities. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald, who died as an infant and his brother, Robert Elwyn Harris, of San Clemente. Bert is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce; his son, Gerry, of Newport Beach; his daughter Ann Barron and her husband Richard of Santa Ana and their daughters Jamie Clapper and Cori Esperanza. He especially enjoyed his five great grandchildren, Niya, Andrew, Naomi, Ella and Trey. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Esther Harris of San Clemente and her family. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana on Tuesday, November 16 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Fullerton or the music ministry of Trinity Pres. in Santa Ana.

Oh what a wonderful friend is gone. " The elements were so mixed in
him, " he was very brave but very gentle at the same time. His
senior year, nobody in the Sunset League could swim the 100 yard
free- style faster than he. We always double-dated, ALL THE TIME,
and hung out together too , and I don't think I ever saw Richie really
angry about anything. For a while , when we were in school together,
I knew all of Richie's secrets, and he loved all of you.

Stuart, Jr., Robert M., age 58, of Fullerton, passed away on October 25, 2010 after a twelve year battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Robert was born on November 17, 1951 to Robert and Bernadine Stuart. He graduated from Fullerton High School with the class of 1969. During his high school years he met the love of his life, Denise, and they married in 1970. Directly following their marriage, Robert entered into the United Army serving two years in the 172nd Arctic Infantry stationed in Alaska. He was a thirty-six year employee of Nabisco in Buena Park. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Sr.; sister, Judy, and brother, Eric. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Denise; daughters, Tammy Haygood of Riverside, Cindy Stuart of Fullerton, Becky Stuart of Fullerton. He also leaves behind his mother, Bernadine; three sisters and his grandson, Seth. Viewing will be held Saturday, October 30 from 2-5 pm at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary on Harbor Blvd in Fullerton. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 1 at 11 am in the chapel at First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton on Brea Blvd.

Foss, Herbert "Pete" Pete was born in Placentia, California, January 15, 1924 and passed away on October 20, 2010 in Newport Beach, California. Pete was a longtime Newport Beach resident, UCLA alumni, WW II U.S. Navy Lieutenant JG and 35 year aerospace engineer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Orlene Jencks Foss; 3 children; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Peter will be remembered for his Christian faith, commitment to his family, sense of humor, love of fishing, sailing, golf and camping. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Friday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, you may donate in his name to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

GEORGE WILLETS, FUHS '57

George Earl Willets fought a final battle with cancer that ended September 19, 2010. He passed away at age 71 in Redding, CA. George was born and raised in southern California. He relocated to the north state, living in Viola and settling permanently in Redding, after a lengthy recovery from intensive surgery for throat cancer. He became the owner/operator of a successful car pin striping business and a long-time volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Despite losing his vocal cords to throat cancer, George regained his ability to speak, using his new voice to educate teen audiences on the perils of smoking, encouraging them to make informed choices about risk behaviors, and encouraging other cancer survivors to live life to the fullest. George shared his tobacco-free message with youth from California to West Virginia. He was an active advocate against smoking, serving as chairman and spokesperson for the Shasta County Tobacco Education Coalition. In addition, he was dedicated to his sobriety and a prominent figure in the recovery community, well known for his generous embrace and encouragement of newcomers. George was proud to realize the continuation of his message through the June 2010 publication of his book That's Easy For You To Say - Memoirs of a Smoker, Laryngectomee, and Public Speaker.
George leaves behind a vast family of friends who have been touched by his kindness and loving spirit. A celebration of life will be open to all on October 9th at 2 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living (1905 Hartnell Avenue, Redding).
