RICHARD MILLER FUHS '54

Miller, Richard Merle
March 12, 1936 - February 5, 2007
Dick Miller passed away suddenly and unexpectedly during a workout at the health spa. Dick was born in Houston Texas, but soon moved with his mother to the family farm near Springfield, Ohio. His formative years were divided between the farm and Southern California. In 1954 Dick graduated from Fullerton High School and joined the Navy, serving four years on a diesel powered submarine, the U.S.S. Runner. Following his honorable discharge Dick worked several years for the U.S. Forest Service in the Mammoth Lakes area, then was a partner in a family owned convalescent home business. Dick had always enjoyed the great out-of-doors, so when the business was sold, he founded and presided over the Canyon Explorers Club, a non-profit outings club. Several of the early trips were Thanksgiving-weekend bus trips to backpack in the Grand Canyon. Under his stewardship from 1972 to 2006, members traveled all over the world, hiking and backpacking, canoeing, biking, skiing, sightseeing and enjoying each others' company. The many years of adventures and camaraderie have created a "family" of friends, all of whom are grateful for Dick's vision and leadership of CEC. Dick is survived by his aunt, Edna S. Hammond, and his long-term companion, Eugenia Hathaway. He will be greatly missed.
