SANDRA BECHTOLD BATES, FUHS '53

Sandy's husband Chuck died November 11, 2007. They came to the Pow Wow luncheons in 2005 and 2006 so we got to know Chuck, but both had health problems that kept them from the one this year. Click on the word "COMMENTS" below this post to read his obituary.

Charles E. "Chuck" Bates, Sr.
(November 28, 1931 - November 11, 2007)

Charles E. “Chuck” Bates. Sr., 75 years of age and a resident of Hoquiam for the past 29 years, died on Sunday, November 11, 2007 at Pacific Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hoquiam, Washington. He was born on November 28, 1931 in Port Townsend, Washington to William John and Gwendolyn (Hill) Bates. He was proud of his American Indian heritage as full member of the Jamestown S’ Klallam Indian Nation. He always enjoyed the out doors and was a master of hunting and fishing.
Chuck was raised and attended school in Everett and following his high school education he enlisted into the US Navy. He served aboard a Submarine Tender where he was a Storekeeper, an assistant to the Payroll Officer and while in Hawaii he served on the Shore Patrol. While in the Navy he attended numerous schools, including firefighting and was a member of one of their judo teams.
Toward the end of his military service he met Sandra K. Bechtold and they were married on October 27, 1954 in Fullerton, California. The couple celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this past month.
Following their wedding the couple made their home in Packwood, Washington where Chuck worked in a saw mill for 9 and a half years and helped to set up the city’s volunteer fire department. It was in Packwood where Chuck accepted Christ as his savior and attended the Southern Baptist Church.
In 1964 the family moved to St. Helens, Oregon where he was a sawyer for Boise Cascade. While continuing work for the mill he became a member of the St. Helens Reserve Police Department and quickly obtained the rank of Captain. Chuck and his family attended Grace Baptist Church and Warren Baptist Church and served as a deacon at both churches. In 1978 he moved to Hoquiam and became an active member and deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church.
As a youth he enjoyed hunting, clam digging and sport fishing, activities that he taught to his kids and grandkids. He also played on the Weyerhaeuser city league softball team in Aberdeen.
In 1978 Chuck began working for the Grays Harbor Hardwood Saw Mill in Hoquiam. He was a member of the Timber Operators Council as well as the I.W.A. An industrial accident in 1986 forced Chuck into early retirement.
His family and others will remember Chuck for his unconditional love and always serving others in the communities where he lived. He forever practiced what the Bible taught him. Chuck was always caring for anyone in need, whether it was in their own home, a nursing home or hospital. He enjoyed taking food to them as well to the Hoquiam Fire Department Crew that raves about his special homemade salsa. He spent a great deal of time at the Aberdeen Library where his wife works and he would stay until closing time and make sure the staff was safe and made it to their cars. He loved going to his kids', grandkids' and great grandkids' sporting events and providing food and beverages for the whole team.
Chuck’s life impacted countless others and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
His survivors include: his wife, Sandy Bates at the family home in Hoquiam; his son, Chuck Bates, Jr. and his wife, Molly of Montesano; four daughters, Shelley Cadd of Newburg, Oregon, Twana Butkus and her husband, Don of Scappoose, Oregon, Jacque Glidden of Anacortes and Dani Lei Gorden of Wilsonville, Oregon; two sisters, Joetta Matheny of Everett and Frances Ivelia of Marysville; 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Thursday and Friday and from 9:00 am until 12 Noon on Saturday at the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.
The family has requested donations be sent to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, 408 “J” Street in Hoquiam or to the Hoquiam Firefighter’s Local #315, Benefit Fund, 625 – 8th Street, Hoquiam 98550.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 17, 2007 in the Immanuel Baptist Church, 408 “J” Street in Hoquiam.
