Sad news for the class of 1950 from Roger's wife after she received the 2012 Pow Wow letter:
Received your e-mail and thank you. Unfortunately, Roger lost his 20-yr. battle with prostate CA on 08/12/11. He always looked forward to the luncheons and spoke so fondly of his high school years and friends that he made (some lifetime). Have a wonderful get-together, and I'm sure he will be there in spirit.
Lovingly, Sharron Beam
The following was written by Roger's children.
Born in Battlecreek Michigan, Roger moved to California in
1940 when he was 8 years old. He attended Washington Jr. High in 1945 where he
was the school Safely Monitor. He later attended Fullerton High School and
graduated in 1950. There he was co-captain of the football team, played
basketball and was the Track and Field supervisor. After high-school, he
attended Fullerton Junior College and then went on to Long Beach State
University and UCLA where he received his BA and Masters degree in Education.
In 1955, he married his first wife, Barbara, and together they raised five
beautiful children. His first teaching job was at Sierra High school in the
automotive department. He then went on to teach at Compton College and taught
vocational and occupational education. He was promoted to Coordinator of
Industrial. Technology and developed a highly esteemed program entitled, The
Communication and Recruitment Project. After Compton College, Roger went on to
work at Cerritos College as an assistant dean. After 5 years in this position,
he became the Director of Educational Development for the technology division.
It was in this position that The American Vocational Association rewarded Roger
with THE TOP post secondary automotive service program in the nation. Because
of this recognition, the school received over $100,000 in donation, much of it
from General Motors. Roger's career was extremely important to him as well as
the institute of education. When Roger wasn't teaching, he satisfied his need
for speed with various types of motorcycles and competitive boat and water ski
racing; it was a family affair. He spent lots of good times with his family. It
was in 1982 where he once again fell in love and married Sharron. In 1994,
Roger retired from teaching. It was in his retirement where he enjoyed welding,
working on cars, listening to talk-radio, and spending time with his children
and grandchildren. Roger was always your go to person; if you ever needed
anything he was always there to lend a hand.
