Born January 7, 1940 in East LA and adopted by Floyd Gilbert Johnson and Mildred Brown. Mike moved to Fullerton in 1945 and attended the local elementary schools and middle schools, graduating from Fullerton Union High School in 1958 to become an Indian forever.
He joined the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout award in 1955 and continued his scouting career as a volunteer not only in the United States but in Japan and Europe from being an Assistant Scoutmaster to various District and Council positions. Not only did he receive his Eagle Scout award he also was awarded the Scouters Training Award, Scouters Key for Scoutmaster and Commissioner, Scoutmasters Award of Merit, The St. George Award, The James E West Award, and held the Wood Badge Trainers beads.
Shortly after turning 17 he joined the US Marine Corps Reserve and upon graduation he enlisted in the regular Marine Corps as a parachute rigger and served the Marines for six years. He then enlisted in the United States
Army spending 22 years as a Military Police Officer until his retirement in 1985.
After retiring from the Army he continued as a volunteer Scout Leader and became involved with the Marine Corps League and Young Marines program. He also became involved in the California State Military Reserve serving 10 years as a Command Sergeant Major. This led to his involvement with the American Red Cross Disaster Services where he deployed to four national incidents as well as in Puerto Rico.
Since moving back to Fullerton he was involved with the Fullerton Union High School Pow Wow Reunion as his class representative and Committee Chairman during his class hosting event. He served two terms on the City of Fullerton Airport Noise & Safety Commission and the Leon Owens Foundation.
In 1994 Mike met his future third (and final) wife, Clare Hagmaier Lawson through a mutual Boy Scouting friend and were married in October 2001, whom he leaves behind. In addition, he leaves behind his brother, Gary (Patti); sons, Dale (Chris) and Michael "Harvey" and his daughter, Janet (Justin) Johnson; and three grandchildren, Kathleen, Ashley and David.
Mike has been described as unique, like s'mores: crusty on the outside but gooey on the inside.
His Celebration of Life will be Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 12 - 5 PM at the Hillcrest Park Terrace in Fullerton.
