Neisess, Kendall Dale - FUHS 1938

Neisess, Kendall Dale

July 9, 1919 - August 4, 2019

Kendall was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and lived on a farm until moving to Orange County at age 6 in 1926. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1938. He was active in youth activities with the YMCA and Church groups. Kendall went to Fullerton College and UCLA and then to USC where he met Sandy. He was getting his Master’s degree while Sandy was completing her nursing degree. Kendall was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII.

On June 23, 1945 while off the coast of Japan, his ship hit a mine. The blast threw everyone about, many suffering severe major injuries. As the second in command, with the Captain severely injured, Kendall made sure all the men made it to life rafts, even the ship’s dog, “Doc”, who went on to live 10 more years in Chicago. Kendall was awarded a Purple Heart.

After discharge, he remained in the Navy Reserves for 26 years, retiring as a Commander.

Upon leaving the Navy, Kendall began teaching high school classes in the Orange School District and then served as a counselor, vice principal and principal.
He then transferred to elementary schools as a principal until his retirement in 1984 after 39 years.

Kendall was an active volunteer in the Fullerton community his entire adult life. He was active in YMCA, Western Youth Services, where he served on the Board of Directors, and a teacher in his church for 60 years. For 50 years, he led the Weekday Christian Education program that provided the Chapel on Wheels trailers to Fullerton elementary schools. He coordinated a monthly paper drive throughout Fullerton that provided the funding for all those years.

As an active member of the Fullerton American Legion Post 142 for 30 years, Kendall chaired the education committee that provides academic scholarships to students at the three Fullerton high schools. He also served as the Post Commander in 2000 and was always one of the first volunteers to sign up for any work details for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Kendall represented the best of what we hope from all our citizens; a willingness to help build and maintain the community. When Kendall joined an organization, he got involved. He was not one of the silent majority or card-carrying members. He was always ready to contribute.

As a member of the “Greatest Generation”, Kendall was honored at the May 2015 Memorial Day ceremony at Loma Vista Memorial Park. In June 2015, the City of Fullerton honored him by naming him the Volunteer of the Month.

Kendall and his wife Sandy were married for 72 years; have 5 children, Robin Scofield, Roger, Devon, Kurt and Scott; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren
and 4 great-great grandchildren.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday, August 16th from 4:00-6:00 pm at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary, 902 N. Harbor Blvd, Fullerton.

Hans Stanley Kohlenberger - FUHS 1946

Hans Stanley Kohlenberger
July 30, 1928 - July 21, 2019

Hans Stanley Kohlenberger went to be with the Lord Jesus on Sunday morning, July 21, 2019. He was a faithful man of God whose highly principled life exemplified his dedication to the Lord and his love for his family. Born in Fullerton on July 30, 1928, Stan, as many knew him, was the son of H. H. Kohlenberger and Louise Fair Craven. His civic-minded father was mayor of Fullerton from 1939 to 1944. His beloved mother died in a tragic accident in 1942.
Stan attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his degree in architecture, subsequently working in San Francisco for the legendary firm of Wurster, Bernardi, and Emmons. William Wurster took a personal interest in Stan, training him on-the-job on the finer points of architecture. He also worked for DeMars and Reay, architects in Oakland after which he opened his own office in Oakland.
After eight years in the bay area, Stan moved his family back to southern California, making his home again in Fullerton. He worked for the architecture firm of William Blurock and Associates in Newport Beach before opening his own business in downtown Fullerton. His projects included the libraries at Orange Coast College and the City of Fullerton, churches, and home remodels for many clients. The Fullerton Main Library, built in 1973, was his proudest accomplishment. The powerful metalwork creation of artist Sergio O’Cadiz graced the entrance courtyard. With admiration, Stan’s brother, Chuck Kohlenberger, referred to him as “the consummate architect.”
Stan married his lifetime sweetheart, Irene Marie Alvarado, in 1952. When they met at Fullerton College, he was smitten. When Stan transferred to UC Berkeley, he hitchhiked to southern California to see Irene one weekend each month for at least a year until he bought a Ford Model A Coupe. When he finally proposed, he told her he loved her, but that he could go on without her if she turned him down. And with that, she said yes. They were married for nearly 67 years and have seven children, Angela, Matthew, Juliana, Clare, Teresa, Anthony, and Hans.
Stan’s interests were wide-ranging. He loved flying and earned his pilot’s license at the age of 62. He flew until he was in his eighties and frequented the Fullerton Airport hobnobbing with his many friends at the AFI Flight Training Center. He loved music, learning the trumpet in high school. During college, the band Stan played in opened for Nat King Cole who was performing in the bay area. In his later years, he joined the Fullerton Community Band, playing in many public concerts and acting as a strong advocate and promoter. He attended Bible Study Fellowship and held regular meetings of CBMC, the Christian Business Men’s Committee at his office in Fullerton. He supported California Right to Life, the Orange County Rescue Mission, the Union Rescue Mission, and Thru the Bible Radio Ministries.
Stan Kohlenberger is survived by his wife, Irene, his seven children, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His ashes will be scattered from a plane high above the Pacific Ocean near Huntington Beach after the Celebration of Life service at St. Juliana’s Church in Fullerton at 10:00 am on August 5, 2019. McAulay & Wallace Mortuary is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to California Right to Life, Walnut Creek, CA.
