KATHLEEN ROSE TRUXAW, FUHS 1944?

KATHLEEN ROSE TRUXAW, FUHS 1944?
OR DID SHE ATTEND CATHOLIC SCHOOL?

Life Legacy

Kathleen Rose O’Hanlon Truxaw of Whittier, California, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27th at 4:19 PM. Kathleen made the most of her 91 years: raising eight children, earning multiple advanced degrees, holding several careers, and being a good friend and neighbor. She was an activist who helped under-privileged youth, worked for civil rights at great personal cost to herself, and embodied the charitable aspects of her faith. Until her last days, she was recalled as having a “still incredible mind and luminous soul,” and being “a great woman who changed so many for the better" and "a formidable force of nature."
Kathleen was born on February 13, 1926, in Fullerton, California, to Daniel and Margaret (Cottam) O’Hanlon, the fifth of seven children. Kathleen got her B.A. from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles and taught in San Pedro, California, before marrying John Edmund Truxaw on July 12, 1947 and beginning their family of eight children. In 1953, John and Kathleen moved their family into the house they had built in Whittier, where she still lived at the time of her death.
The family traveled extensively in their own VW bus or in cars provided by car dealerships in exchange for recognition in newspaper stories about the trips. Kathleen was determined that her children have a wide range of exposure to the country and its people.
Education was a passion for Kathleen. She substitute taught off and on while raising her eight children. After having her eighth child in 1962, she went back to school and earned multiple advanced degrees. In 1968, she earned her M.S. in Special Education from California State University Fullerton, and then taught special education classes while working on her doctorate in Educational Psychology, which she received in 1973 from the University of Southern California. Following that, she worked as a school psychologist and behavior specialist for Los Angeles Unified School District. While doing that she decided to go back to school yet again, earning her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1986. She practiced estate law and also investigated special education compliance cases for the State of California. She represented the South Whittier Community Housing Corporation in an effort to build homes for needy families. Through all of this time, she bought and sold real estate.
Kathleen was an active member of St. Gregory the Great Church in Whittier from the time the family moved there. For a period of time, she was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. In her later years, she was active in a Bible Study group and attended Mass every day that she could. She also took Communion to members of the Church who were not able to leave their homes. In February of 2016, more than 100 of her family and friends celebrated her 90th birthday at the Fullerton Public Library on the site of an apartment where she lived in 1949 and within view of the house where she grew up.
Kathleen is predeceased by her husband, John Edmund Truxaw, her son, John Daniel Truxaw, her brothers Dan (Father Dan) and Tom, and her sisters Margaret (Sister Eileen), Eileen (Sister Kathleen) and Marjorie. She is survived by her brother Larry; her children Kathy (Wayne), Danny (Mia), Margaret, Mary (Mark), Christopher (Diane), Matt (Christine), and Claire (Kevin); her grandchildren Danielle (Max), Patricia, Sarah, John, Ellen (John), Kathleen (James), James, Daniel, William, Andrew, and Amelia; and her great grandchildren Sylvia, Hannah, and Cedar.
A Rosary and Visitation will be held at St. Gregory the Great Church in Whittier on Monday, October 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at St. Gregory the Great Church in Whittier on Tuesday, October 3rd at 10:00 AM, with burial services at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kathleen Truxaw to the Los Angeles Catholic Worker (http://lacatholicworker.org/donations).

MICHAEL LAPINE COLE, FUHS 1955 OR 1956?

MICHAEL LAPINE COLE, FUHS 1955 OR 1956?

Cole, Michael Lapine passed away on November 8, 2017, of cancer, surrounded by Sharon, his wife of 54 years, his daughter Michelle, and his grandson Elijah. He was born in Tientsin, China, on December 18, 1937, of a Russian mother and a French father. He spent his early years there during WWII when the Japanese occupied China, coming to America when he was in middle school. He attended many schools as his step-father was in the military, but he graduated from Fullerton Union High School, earned his BA from Cal State Fullerton and his Master's degree from Chapman College.
His family and friends thought of him as a Renaissance man as he had many interests and pursued them with passion. He was an elementary school teacher, a school principal, an owner of a liquor store, a real estate agent, and an owner of a mortgage company. He was a masterful storyteller, and in retirement he wrote and had published 15 novels. He spent hours at the computer researching background for his stories so, although most were archaeological adventure stories or science fiction, they were based on facts. He enjoyed golf, cooking, winning at bridge, traveling and barbequing at Lake Forest Golf Course. He was an avid gardener and took so much pride in his flowers and plants, but most of all, he loved making memories with his friends.

Betty Ruth (Gifford) Cooley was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on March 1, 2018 passing away peacefully at her home in Placentia, California. She was 91 years old.

Born in 1926 to Maurice and Mildred Gifford of Lindsay, California, Betty lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the moon landing, the rise of the internet...and 16 different presidents.

In 1942 she moved with her family to Fullerton and attended Fullerton Union High School.

Betty enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

After college she enjoyed a brief stint in the entertainment industry, working at RKO Studios during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Betty wed Jack Cooley in 1953, and they enjoyed many wonderful years of love and laughter until his death in 1992. When her children were young, her primary focus was on being a homemaker. She later worked as an Anaheim Convention Center 'Red Coat' where she made many new friends — and bridge partners. A long-time member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, she also served as an active member of P.E.O. and the Assistance League. Betty enjoyed books, movies, Broadway theater (especially musicals) and jazz.

She had a special affection for vocalist Sarah Partridge, whom she claimed to have 'discovered.'

She danced the Balboa and could do a mean tap dance.

She and Jack also enjoyed travel, including memorable trips to Asia and Europe, and she later made several visits to New York City with her daughter and close friends. Her life was a testament of grace and love to all who knew her.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Claudia; her son, Todd; and her grandchildren, Braden Cooley, Paige Cooley Schmidt and her husband, Matt Schmidt.

BOYD, RUSSELL KNOX, FUHS 1944

Boyd, Russell Knox, FUHS 1944

Russell Knox Boyd passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Friday, March 9, 2018, in Phelan, California at the age of 91. Knox Boyd is survived by his companion Linda Salter; two of his sons, Michael Leslie Boyd, and Jeffery Lynn Boyd and two daughters Heidi and Taina Boyd as well as 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his two sons, David Alan Boyd, and Russell Steven Boyd as well as his five siblings, Kenneth Jack Boyd, Dennis Flin Boyd, Douglas Fairbanks Boyd, Richard "Scrumpy" Boyd, and Bernice Boyd.
Knox was born on June 10, 1926 in Porter, Oklahoma to Richard Millard Boyd and Atta Belle Kirksey/Boyd. He graduated from Fullerton Union High School in 1944 and promptly joined the
United States Navy that same year and served until 1947. He married Mary Louise Dale, in 1947. Over eight years, the couple welcomed 4 boys into their home.
Knox took pride in being a jack of all trades and would never part ways with a single penny to pay someone else for something he could do, fix, or build himself. From carpentry to masonry, to anything that went fast or had a motor; he could build, fix, or create anything he put his mind to. His sense of humor was notoriously quick witted and his one-liners are something his surviving family will cherish alongside of his memories forever.
A funeral is scheduled for Monday, March 19, 2018 at McAulay & Wallace Mortuary, 902 N. Harbor Blvd. Fullerton, California. A viewing is scheduled for 10:00am and services will start at 11:00am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Russell Knox Boyd's life. The family would like to give a special thanks to Neil O'Connor of O'Connor Mortuary and John Ramos for all of their assistance.
