BUY FOREVER STAMPS BEFORE MAY 12

It isn't the pennies that I will save if I buy some Forever stamps before the rate hike that is the main attraction of the stamps for me, but the fact that I won't have to remember what first class postage stamps cost as they escalate each year. It drives me crazy trying to remember if an old stamp that I grab needs another 1 or 2 cent stamp with it. I have so many old stamps that don't have their value printed on them. I have tried to research the value of the ones that I have in my stamp box, but many of them are not listed on the internet. The Forever stamp is the answer to my problem. (That and the decision to leave my old questionable-value stamps to the kids to let them figure it out.)
If you don't know what a "Forever" stamp is, you haven't been watching enough TV.
(And, thinking of TV, if you ever plan to use the TV in your kitchen or garage or shop that is working with a rabbit ears now, you better send in your request for those coupons (max 2 to a customer) to help you buy that converter box that you will need next year. We requested ours weeks ago and haven't received the coupons yet. How long do you think it will take to get one when people start waking up to the fact that the time is coming fast when they will need it and the demand increases?)
Late breaking news! Our coupons arrived 10 minutes after I uploaded this post. Here is the hot link to the site that you need to go to: https://www.dtv2009.gov/
IMPORTANT- The coupons expire after 90 days from the date they are mailed to you.

DAVID REES, FUHS '53

I asked David if I could post his pictures and message on the blog and he wrote,
“Most probably will not remember me anyway as I only attended FUHS my last two years of high school, having moved from Ohio.”
His message explaining his costume in his pictures:
Connie,
I am an actor. Since moving to Oregon I have been busier than I ever was in L. A., though I still like the residuals. I keep myself tuned up here by doing what I can. So far, my wife and I have worked a different play, in three different venues and averaged a different play every other month. The pictures of me in a beard are from "The Hobbit" where I played "Gandalf". I am currently in rehearsals for "Done to Death" - opens May 2-18th, "Richard Diamond" with the Old Time Radio Players - plays May 23, 24 & 25th and also currently in rehearsals for "Bye, Bye Birdie" which will play in July.

Lawyer, Raymond Stephen, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2008 in the company of his loving family and was received into the arms of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ray was born on July 21, 1922 in McKenzie, North Dakota. He graduated from Pepperdine University in 1945. It was at Pepperdine that Ray fell in love with and married his wife, Joann. They were married for 62 wonderful years and had two sons, Kem and Kurt and one granddaughter, Andrea. Remaining family are Joann, Kem and Holly, Kurt and Jody, Andrea, and two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Nicole.
Ray coached basketball and tennis and taught drivers education at Fullerton High school for 35 years. He loved all athletics and was an avid golfer. He genuinely loved people and wanted to talk to them. He made each person he met feel important. He had a strong dry sense of humor and warm and friendly personality with a smile that made people feel at ease and laugh.
There will be a memorial service held at Sunny Hills Church of Christ in Fullerton on April 5, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. As Ray battled Alzheimer's disease in his last years, donations may be made to the The Alzheimer's Foundation of America or the Alzheimer's Association.

CHANGED TO A RED TITLE

They finally created a page design that had a true red and white color scheme that I saw when I was setting up the Pow Wow 2008 pictures blog. I just said "Hooray" and chose it and got back to this blog and changed it too. (But I'm too lazy to change all of the rest-maybe later little by little.)

WALLET STOLEN AT POW WOW LUNCHEON

I just received word that a wallet was stolen from a purse during the recent Pow Wow luncheon. The lady purchased an item for sale by the vendors so she knows that she had her wallet when she got there.

Has anyone heard of any other thefts?

(A camera was missing from a table 2 or 3 years ago. We had hoped that it was just mistaken identity, but I never heard that it was returned.)

It is so sad that such a special day has to be spoiled by things like this.

ELLEN (WRIGHT '53) ROWE'S HUSBAND DIED

Email message from Jo Fletcher Hodson:

Hi Connie

I got a call late last night from Caroline Erb, Ellen Wright Rowe's sister, telling me that Ellen's husband, Carl, passed away yesterday afternoon.

Carl had been ill for some time and had, on Friday, returned home from a stay in a rehab center after being hospitalized for several health problems. Ellen told Caroline that he complained of not feeling well and had a very high fever. Unfortunately, he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

If anyone would like to send a card, email Connie for Ellen's address . Funeral arrangements are pending.

Jo Hodson

SLIDE SHOW ABOUT FULLERTON

This message was written by Martin Ruby, FUHS '55, who created the slide show:

If you were at the 10th annual FUHS POW WOW, you saw a slide show that highlighted pictures of how Fullerton and Fullerton High School used to look. There were also many pictures of alumni and events from the past (over 170 pictures). There have been additional pictures added since the Pow Wow. There are pictures of famous alumni (Walter Johnson, Richard Nixon, Del Crandall, Arky Vaughan, Leo Fender, and others), pictures of how FUHS looked in the early 1900’s, old pictures of Fullerton and many of the old buildings we remember from days gone by.

This slide show has 3 different formats (QuickTime – works on all computers, Power Point – for Windows machines, and Keynote – Macs (Apple). One of these programs will work on most computers. If you only have a CD player in your computer, the Power Point or Keynote program can be put on a CD.

You can have some of your old photos of FUHS and or fellow classmates/events added to the slide show. Send me (Martin Ruby) the pictures and they will be part of the show (pictures will be returned). If you send pictures, send names and/or dates that identify the pictures.

Cost of the slide show is $20 (which includes shipping).

IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS THAT DIDN’T ATTEND THE POW WOW, THIS IS A GOOD CHANCE FOR THEM TO SEE SOME OF THE OLD PICTURES OF FUHS AND EVENTS.

WINIFRED MCCANDLESS BEST, FUHS '49

This is an article from the Fullerton paper about Vella McCandless' 100th birthday (Winifred's mother). It looks like Winifred can volunteer for her class's 75th reunion committee.

I know that you can't read it. I can email you my copy, but it isn't much better. Can anyone who gets the Fullerton paper scan a copy at 300 resolution to send to me and I can try to do better? (See below-I typed it.)

What it says:

100 YEARS OF BIRTHDAYS: Centenarian Vella Dolores McCandless of Fullerton enjoys birthday wishes with her daughters, Deanna Tolbert, left, and Winifred Best.

FULLERTON MATRIARCH CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY
Memories of packing oranges in the old Eadington Packing House in Fullerton were part of the snippets from 100 years of life celebrated by Vella Dolores McCandless last month. The leap year baby was born March 1, 1908 in Butterfield, MO. At age 19, she left the midwest to visit her brothers in Los Angeles and found a job at Goodyear Tires.
It was during this time she met Archie McCandless, who was living in Fullerton at the time. The couple married in 1929 and raised two daughters, Winifred Best, now living in Placentia, and Deanna Tolbert of San Diego.
“Vella packed citrus for more than 45 years,” grand-daughter Jennifer Manaserro said. “Whenever there was a special boxed order, the supervisors would always ask Vella to do the packing.”
Her family and friends recall the beautiful flowers and tomatoes McCandless grew in her Fullerton garden. Archie died in 1961.
Today, Vella is happy to be the matriarch for 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Winifred Best is FUHS ‘49
Deanna Tolbert is FUHS year?

BOB OLLAR AND DOROTHY LOIS THOMAS, FUHS ’51, GIVE INDIAN CANDLES

Bob, who makes the Indian candles, and Dorothy Lois, who paints the candles, gave what is probably their last batch of special candles to alumni at the 2008 Pow Wow luncheon March 29. This project takes them the whole winter season each year. The candles have been presented for several years to those alumni who were class representatives or who worked on Pow Wow committees or who contributed in some way to the success of the alumni luncheon. They are an honor and a prized possession. I don’t know if all who deserved one, got one, but if you got one because you were in the right place at the right time and your class representative or a committee member didn’t, think about presenting him/her with it as a thank you for all the work that was done for you and your classmates.
And give Bob and Dorothy Lois your thanks for thinking of such a unique way to express their gratitude.
