JUDY ROCKWELL EBERHARDT, FUHS '57, BOOK

Louise Phelps Shamblen, FUHS '57, sent me the following email message:

Judy Rockwell Eberhardt has a new book out. Below is a short description of it and where you can purchase it.
Shape Up or bite me! “SWALK Lessons from Six Teens in Health Class" is a humorous illustrated novella written from a teens-eye view that is packed with enough witty dialogue and eye-opening, easy-to-digest facts to levitate even the most reluctant sofa spud. It also aids concerned parents, teachers, and health-care professionals by encouraging kids to make better food choices, exercise more, and in general, reboot their operating systems.
About the Author: Judy Eberhardt lives on the Long Beach, California Peninsula with her husband Charlie. Her first novel, Shape Up or bite me! was inspired by a teen relative who struggled with weight issues before figuring out that an attitude adjustment, eating right, and exercise can help. Having worked for animators Hanna-Barbera, and being involved with script development and production in the entertainment business in Los Angeles for years, Judy took this inspiration and created an entertaining story that will empower kids to make their own healthy choices.

On a personal note, I attended school with Owen from 1st grade at Ford School. He was an accomplished piano player, and entertained us often at parties. He was a Yell Leader in our Senior year, while I was a Song Leader. We had a lot of fun leading the alumni in songs and yells. Lots of good memories of a great guy! As I recall, he graduated from USC.

BOB FULTON, FUHS ‘48

(One of the originators of the Pow Wow alumni luncheon)
Phyl Munn received the following email from Margie Fulton.
Sent: Sunday, January 17, 2010 11:07 PM
Subject: Bob

Dear friends and family;

You may have received an e-mail from Bob on January 5th telling about the wonderful touch from God that miraculously improved his condition, which was confirmed by 2 of his doctors. As he had said, his test results were turning around right before Christmas. Because of God’s graciousness, Bob was able to come home on New Year’s Eve, 1 month after admission, after previously being told that he would not be going home again, but straight to hospice. After being home 11 days, sleeping in his own bed, being with friends and family, as well as his precious Scotty McTavish, he suddenly took a turn for the worse. The blood counts that had been climbing and cancer cells that had seemed to disappear, came back with a vengeance. The short of it is that he went into hospice 4 days later and succombed the next morning.

The Lord Jesus Christ took him home for the ultimate healing, and we now realize that the 10 days home were God’s way of letting Bob experience one final trip home to say goodbye before He took him home to eternity.

Bob will have a memorial celebration this Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Evangelical Free Church at 4080 Sweetgrass Lane, Bonsall, CA, 92003 (http://www.refc.org/). Following will be a reception at the church. The church is on the corner of CA-76 (Mission Rd.) and Sweetgrass Lane.

From the 5 Freeway:
Exit CA-76 East (Mission Road) through Oceanside appx. 13 miles to Sweetgrass Ln. in Bonsall. Turn Left, then Right into the parking lot.

From the 15 Freeway:
Exit CA-76 / Pala Rd. and turn Right heading West. Go appx. 4 miles and turn Right on Sweetgrass Lane, and Right into the parking lot.

Flowers are welcome, however in lieu of that should you wish to make a donation to Bob’s favorite charity listed below in his name, it would be appreciated as well. Also a basket will be provided in the church foyer for this charity, and the church will facilitate its distribution.

We thank you for all your prayers and support that you have given us over these difficult months. We hope those of you in the area will be able to come Saturday and help us celebrate his life with us.
Love,
Margie and Family

Bob is a special guy - for some of us he is remembered being on the track team, being active in Hi-Y, owning Gifford's Stationary in Fullerton, being a missionary with his wife Margie, being an active supporter of his church and Margie's musical career and being one of the originators of Powwow after our 50th reunion.
A personal remembrance - At my dad's memorial, Margie accompanied the soloist who sang "Impossible Dream" and seeing Bob unexpectedly after so many years.

DOROTHY THOMPSON LODGE, FUHS '30

Phyl Bolinger Munn, FUHS '49, sent this email:

You were given the incorrect info as to Mary Jane Thompson Lodge passing away. It was Dorothy Thompson Lodge. I will snail mail you her Obit, as she was quite an important person, and a pleasure to me to have known her. I know you want the correct info.
Phyl

Here is the obituary that Phyl sent:

Dorothy Lodge

Dorothy Lodge, 97 ENCINITAS --
Dorothy Thompson Lodge was born on August 22, 1912, and grew up in Fullerton, California. Her parents, Orrin and Margaret Herrick Thompson, had moved to California from Iowa, settling in Fullerton around 1910. Dorothy attended public schools in Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton Union High School before attending Pomona College. She spent her junior year in New York City, attending Barnard College. After graduation from Pomona, Dorothy enrolled at the University of Southern California Law School, where she graduated in 1938. There were eleven women in her law school class, which, at that time, was considered a "bumper crop." A pioneering woman lawyer, she initially worked in her brother Raymond Thompson's law office in Fullerton, and briefly as a public defender. Later, she served as Orange County's first woman deputy district attorney. When Raymond was appointed to the Superior Court, she took over his practice and continued its growth. She served as general counsel and corporate secretary of Pacific Hawaiian Corporation (producers of Hawaiian Punch). She also served on the Board of Directors of Fullerton Savings & Loan Association for over 50 years. Dorothy practiced law in Orange and San Diego Counties for more than 45 years, with her office at home much of the time when her children were young. In 1942 Dorothy married Hilmer Gilbert Lodge, a teacher and coach whom Dorothy met through her sister Helen's husband, Harold Lang. Dorothy and Hilmer lived briefly in Fullerton before moving to Placentia, where they raised their five children. Hilmer was best known as a successful track and field coach and founder of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays. In 1963 they moved to Pala where they were engaged in citrus farming. Dorothy and Hilmer enjoyed many happy years at the Pala ranch before Hilmer passed away in 1977. She continued to be very active following Hilmer's death, and particularly enjoyed visits with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She died peacefully at the Encinitas Retirement Gardens on January 3, 2010, in her 97th year. Dorothy is survived by children, Eric Lodge of Solana Beach, Elizabeth ("Betsy") Bremer of Mililani, Hawaii, Raymond Lodge of Pala, Margaret Louise Lodge of El Cajon, and Rosemary Otto of Spokane, Washington, as well as their spouses, 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Pauma Valley on Saturday, January 16, at 11am. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Home of Guiding Hands, 1825 Gillespie Way, Suite 200, El Cajon, CA 92020, where Dorothy's daughter, Margaret, has resided for many years.
