Sad news for the class of 1950 from Roger's wife after she received the 2012 Pow Wow letter:

Received your e-mail and thank you. Unfortunately, Roger lost his 20-yr. battle with prostate CA on 08/12/11. He always looked forward to the luncheons and spoke so fondly of his high school years and friends that he made (some lifetime). Have a wonderful get-together, and I'm sure he will be there in spirit.

Lovingly, Sharron Beam

The following was written by Roger's children.

Born in Battlecreek Michigan, Roger moved to California in 1940 when he was 8 years old. He attended Washington Jr. High in 1945 where he was the school Safely Monitor. He later attended Fullerton High School and graduated in 1950. There he was co-captain of the football team, played basketball and was the Track and Field supervisor. After high-school, he attended Fullerton Junior College and then went on to Long Beach State University and UCLA where he received his BA and Masters degree in Education. In 1955, he married his first wife, Barbara, and together they raised five beautiful children. His first teaching job was at Sierra High school in the automotive department. He then went on to teach at Compton College and taught vocational and occupational education. He was promoted to Coordinator of Industrial. Technology and developed a highly esteemed program entitled, The Communication and Recruitment Project. After Compton College, Roger went on to work at Cerritos College as an assistant dean. After 5 years in this position, he became the Director of Educational Development for the technology division. It was in this position that The American Vocational Association rewarded Roger with THE TOP post secondary automotive service program in the nation. Because of this recognition, the school received over $100,000 in donation, much of it from General Motors. Roger's career was extremely important to him as well as the institute of education. When Roger wasn't teaching, he satisfied his need for speed with various types of motorcycles and competitive boat and water ski racing; it was a family affair. He spent lots of good times with his family. It was in 1982 where he once again fell in love and married Sharron. In 1994, Roger retired from teaching. It was in his retirement where he enjoyed welding, working on cars, listening to talk-radio, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Roger was always your go to person; if you ever needed anything he was always there to lend a hand.

PATTY HENDRA, WIFE OF RON, FUHS 1958, FUNERAL 9/17/2011

Mikie Johnson, class rep for FUHS 1958, forwarded this email:
It is with great sadness that our family must inform you that despite her determination and strong desire to conquer and overcome the cancer, Patti graciously bowed out of our lives on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. As you are well aware, our mother, wife, friend and neighbor was a no frills type of woman. Because of this, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society be considered instead. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 11:00am.
Memory Gardens Memorial Park
455 W. Central Avenue Brea, CA 92821
(714) 529-3961
The family wishes to invite you back to Patti and Ron's house following the service for an additional gathering.
Maps will be available at the service.
Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family. ~Anthony Brandt

STEPHEN C. DEPHILLIPS, FUHS 1989

DePhillips, Steven C.,

40, of Costa Mesa, Calif. died on Tuesday evening, August 30, after being the victim of a homicide when stabbed by an assailant down the street from his home. The suspect is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. Steven was pronounced dead on arrival at Western Medical Center. The son of Steven and Deborah DePhillips, they nicknamed him "Skeebo." Steven was born in Anaheim, California on February 17, 1971 at Anaheim Memorial Hospital. He is survived by a daughter, two brothers and a sister, Shaun, Daniel and Summer, 11 nieces and nephews and 10 aunts and uncles.
A graduate of Fullerton High School in 1989, Steven's goal was to pursue a career in computer drafting. Unfortunately he struggled with the disease of drug addiction for the last 15 years of his life. When his daughter Katharine Olivia Gregory, now 6-years-old, was born it seemed to breathe a new life into him as he adored her and would do anything for her. Steven really tried to turn his life around after she was born. He was a fun loving person and would do anything he could to help people. He grew up playing baseball in the East Fullerton Little League and then Pony/Colt before high school. He was also a star quarterback for the Placentia/Yorba Linda Junior All American football teams until high school where he received many awards including scholar athlete in 1987. He was actively pursuing a college scholarship for sports, but sadly entered a world of addiction.
A good daddy, great athlete and a loving person, Steven was admired and loved by many though mostly unaware how much he positively influenced some of the people in his life. While he felt the only person who loved him was his daughter, this just isn't true.
A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. on September 14, at Rose Hills Memorial Park at 3888 Workman Mill Road in Whittier at gate 17. A reception will immediately follow at the home of Steven's parents Mr. and Mrs. Jay Werbil from 3 to 6 p.m. at 112 N. Roosevelt Ave., Fullerton.
A memorial trust has been set up for Steven's daughter Katharine. For more information please call Rose Hills Memorial Park (562) 699-0921 or Mrs. Jay Werbil (714) 879-7871.

He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas and is survived by his mother, Jane; brothers, Mark and Claude; sister, Jane Shreve; niece, Natalie; nephews, Michael, lan and Connor; brother-in-law, Mike Shreve; sister-in-law, Robyn Yarbrough; and his beloved Annie
